Can an illegal immigrant leave the United States...?

by air with just a passport from their country (no visa obviously). For example, someone that wants to return to where they came from, and come back legally (and has a spouse and child here)? What happens when they get to the airport? Or is it better to go back illegally the way they came, risking their life again?

Answer:
The US can't keep them from going back to their country. If they have a passport they can return to their country of origin anytime they want. Now getting back in to the US they would need a Visa unless they decide to come back again illegally...and furthermore an illegal can travel anywhere he or she wants by plane in the US as well because you don't need to prove you are a citizen to fly as long as you have an ID. Also, illegals go back home all the time. They usually just drive back to their countries. The United States isn't going to stop them for going back considering that is what they want.

To the person that asked how illegals can obtain a passport, they can get a mexican passport at any mexican consulate in the United States. All they need is an ID(which many have because there are still states that only require you to be a resident of the state, not the US to get a drivers license) which is either a drivers license or a matricula consular(again obtained at mexican consulate) and birth certificate from mexico. So they could use that to leave the US to go to mexico.
how did he get In?...anybody can swim back you know..
I have understood that people from USA doesn´t need passport for leave the country, just buy ticket and ask in the agency, but I think will be very easy.
They can leave easily, but getting back in the US is the problem.
They will have to go through Customs before they leave...if they were here illegal and do not have a I-95..their passport will be stamp showing not to allow them back in...if you are here illegally you are not allowed to come to the US for 10 years, if ever again...
In the US, there's no customs check on the way out. So when you get the the airport, the check in personnel will check your ID and a passport from your original country, and you won't be checked until you arrive at your country.

However, depending on the country you're going. You may get in trouble with that government, although they have to let you in.

So illegal immigrants can easily go back to their countries in a "Legal" fashion.
Well, if they are here illegally, and can't get legal status to be here, then how would they obtain a passport back to where they came from? That's my only question to this.
If the immigrant can get here, they can leave here too. All he has to do is turn himself in, and the government will happily deport him, legally.
you can go back by air if you want to but you'll be banned from entering the US Legally for 10 years.
