Is the person already living in the USA illegally? If so, I don't care what papers you sign you will always be a criminal in the eyes of true Americans, the ones born here and the ones who followed the law and did the work to become citizens before they crossed the border.

First you need an attorney or lawyer to help you, If you make a mistake you can pay huge concecuences with the INS. There are some free counceling services that you can go to there may be some in your town. If you belong to a religion you can ask your pastor or church for help or advice.Go to the US inmigration website to know more. Make sure you have your birth certificate, passport , school papers and vaccine records from your home country. (if you can, those are important)
I don't know much but start easy...try to get a work permit first.They make it harder if you go and tell them that you want citizenship, (specially if you are a mexican, latino or latin-american, but if you are europen or white it will be easy). Tell that you have a wife and kid to feed and you need a work permit to work, if you made it they will give you a social security card and with that you can get your driver's licence, then file for residency after you get your work permit and then study English and citizenship and file for citizenship after a couple of years. It take long time but is worth. And don't listen to racist, we all should have the same oportunities that this country have to offer. (Some allready have lost all faith in this country). Automatically even without children if you are legally married to a citizen of this country and your marriage was approved then you will be issued a working papers,you then can work legally and should file taxes yearly and it is a wrong concept that you need to have a child for you to stay in this country coz' even how many children you got when you entered to this country illigally then you have to go back to your country of origin to wait for your papers.you should have at least three years before you can file for citizenship.
If the children are born here, they are automatically US citizens. When they reach adulthood, they can file a petition for their illegal parent.
The illegal alien can not file for anything that would make him/her american. But the US citizen spouse can file for a petition to make the illegal spouse legal. You need to have a good immigration lawyer, though.

The truth. it depends on how she got here. If she came legally, with a visa, and then overstayed it's a long process but it's possible to get legal papers.
If she same here "without inspection," meaning she crossed the border illegally, it's going to be almost impossible to get papers. At a minimum she'll have to leave the country and wait while everything is processed. Even if successful it's likely to take a couple years before she can come back.
