Do you have just the status or a valid visa in your passport? If you have a valid H4 visa, you should be able to use it to re-enter. If you changed status to H4 or extended your H4 stay, so that you have just the status with a different (ie NOT H4) or expired visa, you will need to get a new visa while you are abroad. If you are on H4 but have I-485 pending, you should take an advance parole (I-131). Note that if you filed I-485 and are working via EAD, you MUST take an advance parole since you would not be maintaining H4 status if you use the EAD.
