Live & work in the UK with British Nationals (Overseas) passport ??

Can someone help me? Can I live and/or work in the UK holding the BN(O) passport?

I get different answers from people, including the Home Office itself. :-O Also I am holding an Australian passport. Would it be better off entering the UK as an Australian?
