What does EMPATHY mean?

I see many people here in their attempt to demonize undocumented immigrants simply let their long tongues roll with insults and assumptions. Does anyone know what EMPATHY means? What do dictionaries say?? Many thanks, folks!!

Answer:
Empathy (from the Greek εμπάθεια, "to make suffer") is commonly defined as one's ability to recognize, perceive and directly feel the emotion of another. As the states of mind, beliefs, and desires of others are intertwined with their emotions, one with empathy for another may often be able to more effectively define another's mode of thought and mood. Empathy is often characterized as the ability to "put oneself into another's shoes", or experiencing the outlook or emotions of another being within oneself, a sort of emotional resonance.
Those who "let their long tongues roll with insults and assumptions" very likely cannot give empathy towards those you describe as "undocumented immigrants". In order to have empathy for a person or group of people, one must have experienced a similar situation, ordeal, circumstance, etc. Sympathy can be expressed by those who are NOT "undocumented immigrants" but not empathy.

It means that one can identify with another through similar experiences. I am empathetic to mexicans in their fight to keep illegals out of their country.
Can you empathize with Americans who are getting paid less than ever due to the steady steam of scab labor? Who have to deal with shut downs on hospitals and overcrowded schools because of the excess demand that is paid for only by taxpaying citizens?
I'm sorry but practice what you preach, you assume that all paople who try to deport the immigrants are useing no basis for their actions. Put yourself in their shoes can our economy handle a bunch of desperate* people all willing to work for below minimum wage. what happens when you lose your job because someone who didn't want to go through the neccesary procedures to get here without trouble will do it for less money. is your boss going to say
"oh no we have someone here already doing a fine job and paying him isn't a stipulation at all."
im sorry but it's people like you who are going to ignorantly send us into another depression.

*Desperate-not used in a derogatory way. but since they don't want to get caught when the interviewer asks if you are legal, they are going to start finding jobs elsewhere that are willing to pay less undocumented
It's hard to have empathy for large numbers of people marching in our street, with foreign flags, than realizing that it does further their aims, switch to American flags.
Basically walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Put yourself in their situation before you judge them. After all, no one can judge anyone but God.
Empathy is also understanding that American citizens are the victims here. We are forced to endure tens of millions of illegal aliens in our country while waiting for our government to get its head out of its a*s and deport them.

We will not accept illegal aliens with open arms. WE are the real victims here!!
A wonderful example of empathy was the Good Samartian. He was neither a Jew or a Roman...In fact he was looked down upon, because he was neither. He helped a stranger, when he had no obligation to help such a person. There is a person in this world, what was his name? Jesus, he told this story and also told us to do unto others as we would have do unto us, ummmmm, what a novel idea eh?
I know what "empathy" means.

Do you know what "illegal" means?
Maybe illegal immigrants should learn the definition of "empathy" and have a little "empathy" for us and what they are doing to our fine country with their being here illegally. Maybe they can look at the countries they come from and realize how their countries would be acting towards such a huge flood of illegal immigrants. "Empathy" can go a long way - both ways!
Apparently the illegals and their supporters have no concept of the definition.
I don't have an empathy for criminals that break our laws & expect a reward in return. They are not undocumented immigrants... They are "illegal aliens"!
EMPATHY is the word used for not making judgments until you've walked in another man's shoes.I recently read a report about some teenagers who beat a homeless man{a veteran no less}nearly to death. The psychologists the reporter talked to said teenagers today display a PROFOUND LACK of EMPATHY due to being given everything money can buy. These same teenagers display no EMPATHY even for the parents who provide all these things. In the experts opinions these children display some very disturbing trends which include homicidal tendencies and are a danger to others.Including parents. The psychologists went on to say something better be done soon or these children once they are in adulthood will pose a greater risk than any terrorist.
