Once they got past the legalization, it wouldn't have been good for ANYONE except big business.
Any immigration bill allowing people to get away with breaking the law should fail, plain and simple.

Considering the secretive way it started, and the early attempt to ram it through before it garnered the attention of the people, I'd say that, yes, it was a genuine attempt, not just a stunt.
