US Passport!?

Ok, so i'm getting my US Passport in a few days and I have a question. I know I need Proof of US citizenship. I have my birth certificate so no worries. But it says I also need a proof of Identity. I have an ID but I have to send them my id? I kinda need that to cash my checks. lol. Is it really necessary for me to send them that?? I know I have to send my certificate and I have no issues with that. If I DO have to send my ID, then I'll do that. But do i? I mean that's pretty much the only proof I have of Identification.

Answer:
You have to show your ID but it does not have to be mailed off with the application.

You apply at the post office (you probably know that) and there is a form to complete. The postal clerk will check all of your documents and verify your photo ID matches the info on the birth certificate. The form, photos, birth certificate, etc. are then mailed to the passport agency, but you keep the ID.

Note that it is currently taking 3 to 4 months for a new passport, and 4 to 6 weeks if you pay the extra $60 to expedite tha application. If you have a trip planned , be sure to put the departure date on the form (there is a specific block for the information).

Good luck!
send a copy of it..not the orginal.
You just need a picture ID to show the guy at the Post Office when you sign the application.
Original B certificate need to send, just a copy of the ID not the ID. If is file throug an passaport office, but at the post office just show your ID...The person at the post office can verify that is you ID a match with the B Cert.
