An Indian student on study visa, on his way to Belarus is detained in Russia. His study visa has expired. What is the action that would be intiated against him there? Will he be deported immediately? What are the steps that his family members can take here in India for seeking his release and extension of his visa?

Go find an india embassy immediately. It will be a good idea to contact school and tell them what happened. I think they might think since the vis has expired, that student was trying to sneak in illegally. Just let the school know what happened and ask them to send all documents that may help the situation.
Thats a tough one, I only know American laws,,,,but knowing Russia, anything can happen,,,,good luck,,,? At least its not Mexico,,,there you can pay them off,,,,
