Can I claim US citizenship from my american grandmother?
I have her US birth certificate and my father could ask for citizenship himself if that would work better.
Any idea how things work?
Thanks for your help.
Answer:
for sure no, your father never get his US cs, and u gm never claim for her son at the US embassy, is too late for everybody. U father can ask but his US parent is dead. I think be happy with u French nationality.
If you had been born in American, or if one or both of your parents were US citizens at the time of your birth, you would be considered a US citizen. However, I don't know that it would count if your grandmother was American.
Now, if your grandmother was American, your father could be automatically a US citizen by virtue of her nationality.
You may want to check with INS to be sure.
Other than that, you may have to go through the process to become a US citizen.
Good luck and thanks for become a citizen.
US citizenship is based upon the father, not the mother. Therefore, your father still needs to apply if he wants citizenship. It also depends on your age. If you're under 18, you'll have to wait until your father gets US citizenship. If he passes the tests, he'll become a US citizen and all his children under 18 will also become citizens. If you're over 18, you'll have to apply for citizenship yourself. You'll need need to fill out an application at the Naturalization/Immigration office. You can ask the people there what you need to fulfill the application. It usually takes over a year before they call you in for tests. It'll be a written and an oral test. Both of these tests are based upon American history and the law.
