Are there any legal restrictions for renting a room in the US to a citizen from the UK & other countries?

I have had several responses for a room rental in my home in North Carolina for citizens from other countries who want to come to the US & are doing different kinds of humanitarian & research work projects. Some are planning to bring their car. What guidelines & laws should I be aware of?

Answer:
You can rent to anyone, there are a few towns that tried to pass laws making it illegal to rent to illegals but they were shot down by the US Supreme court so there are no laws as to who you can rent to that will hold up in a court of law,but you do have to follow regular zoning laws
I would check with the city counsel, police department and also ask some of your local Realtors.

The reasons they are coming here should be correlated with the government or other organizations and those agency's should have given them resources, if not they should have made living arrangements for them.

I would rather be safe than sorry and rent to an American citizen. You have no way to find out if they have a security clearance or if they are in our country illegally,
Come on over if you are not a commie-lib!! We will wecome you and you can stay in my house!!!
None as long as they r legal and working legally in the U.S. and pay u ur rent on time and that they don't damage ur property like anybody else.
In a few places it is illegal to rent to someone not legally here. It is never illegal to rent just because they are foreigners.
As long as you do your part to try to make sure they are legal you are ok unless you violate a city ordinance of some sort.

Ask to see their passport and immigration documents. They should have an admission document (either an I-94 or I-94W, the part in their passport will say departure record.)
Students and exchange visitors will have extra papers (SEVIS documents). Canadians are not required to have a physical visa glued into their passport unless they are admitted as E-1, E-2, or as someone's fiance.

If you knowningly rent, or reaonably should have known you were renting, to an illegal you can be arrested and charged with harboring an illegal alien. You are not required to know for sure that the documents they show you are genuine, only that they appear to be in order. If they have a passport and a visa and an I-94 you can demonstrate that you did what you could reasonably do to make sure they were ok.
Make sure they have legal documents to be in this country.
