Does anybody know about the I'20 visas for foreigners in the US?
I got a 10 years tourist visa to come to the US B1/B2 and in my last visit to the country I just stayed here and my 6 months temporary permission already expired.. but now I'd like to go to collegue here but I need to have an I'20 Visa and I'm affraid to apply for one thru any school 'cause it will probably be denied and also I might be forced to leave the country 'cause I stayed longer than i was supposed to.
Im not sure how things work so if u know anybody who works in the inmigration department, or you know someone who had been in a case like this, i'd really appreciate if you provide as much info as you can...
thanks
Answer:
You have already been given some good advice, but I want to point out that an I-20 is actually just recognition from the university that you have adequate funding for your studies and any dependants that you have and that they have accepted you into a program until a set time. Once you have that it enables the applican to seek an f1 or j1 visa, and for their dependants to get f2 ro j2 visas respectively. As you are out of status however, your situation is a bit awkward because you now would have to leave the country to apply and because you didn't honour your initial visa agreement it is unlikey that they would let you return. You might consider applying to go to school in a different country (like Canada) and just calling it quits in the US... that is if you are truly serious about following your educational dreams. And Canadians are GREAT, so you'll have a good time.
You are out of status. You are now an illegal alien. You might be able to get an I-20 but you'd have to leave the country since you no longer in status. My guess is that you won't be allowed back.
Yak Man is correct as far as he goes.
There is no such thing as an I-20 Visa.
If you want to study in the US, you must apply and be accepted by a college. The school sends you an I-20 form, with which you then apply for a student visa at a US embassy or consulate overseas. You will not be allowed to change status from tourist to student without leaving the US, since you no longer have a legal status.
I really advice you not to go to any inmigration office, since your permit already expires, that makes you an illegal allien, and you already knows that you don't have any rights or privileges in your case, I suggest you before any move you may make, consult this with a inm. lawyer, because for inm. you already broke the law, I don't see them issuin another student visa.
