If illegal immigrants were eliminated from the job market would they go home?

If a national ID card, like a credit card, was issued only to citizens and emigrants with permission to work here, a computer internet integrated ID center was set up and employers required by laws with heavy penalties to use this easily controlled ID process by accessing the national ID center before hiring anyone, would this be a good way of limiting the access of illegal immigrants to jobs? Would thus making it harder to get a job cause them to go home? Do you think such a program has a practical chance of succeeding? Do you think this would be cost effective?

Answer:
In this age of terrorism we now need a national ID. It's too bad cause I grew up traveling all over the country with only a few dollar bills in my pocket. But, times have changed. A national ID would help enable the monitoring of illegals in our country (presently we don't even know how many there are). The ID would be a requirement for employment. Should a person, or company, hire an illegal without such documentation they should have to pay a hefty fine and perhaps serve prison time. Yes, illegals would ultimately go home if they could not obtain employment... think about it, most people's heart is where their home is... it's where they grew up, had friends and family... plus their language and culture. The Mexican government needs to help keep their good, hard working people in their country instead of not providing competent leadership to promote and establish good jobs. BTY... it's been estimated that if we paid labor a meaningful wage to pick lettuce, etc. that it would only increase the cost of such item(s) by a few pennies per unit. We, as consumers, need to be willing to absorb these additional costs in order to provide decent paying jobs to American citizens.
legal immigrants would let the illegals use theirs. we need to stop hiring illegals and they will go home. it has to start with the company's that hire them.
I hope they would go home if they don't have jobs. That's why I keep saying they should nail the employers! They can't get welfare (except for their anchor babies).

Cost effective? Absolutely!!! I doubt it would cost CA $10 billion each year and that's how much we spend on taking care of the illegal alien criminals.
maybe, but who would fill the wonderful jobs they are doing now? you know people are not breaking down doors to dig ditches, clean your messy hotel rooms and flip your burgers.
every person that is here could have been here legally if we had a system to bring in labor when we needed it.
You'd have to check it for parents of students as well. Because with our next door neighbor not giving universal 'free' education to its poor people, and their ability to not only educate but feed and raise children here at our expense, that alone is a huge draw.
negative... you think people looking for maids and landscapers, roofers and other labor intensive jobs on the cheap, would give a rats @ss about a national ID? I know I dont
