While the immigration bill takes all of the headlines, what is Congress up to on the trade front?
""On behalf of the six million members of Change to Win unions and its Leadership Council, we are disappointed that House Democratic leaders joined with the Bush Administration yesterday to announce a trade deal that is more free than fair.
The agreement does not represent the basis for the type of new U.S. trade policy that this nation desperately needs. Despite improvements in labor and environmental standards, workers remain at risk because the proposal fails to address how to protect U.S. jobs or create new ones. It undermines our prevailing wage and Buy America laws. And it hands foreign firms operating here more privileges over U.S. companies. For working America, that is not a deal."
What do you think?
Answer:
I am a bit of an isolationist. I feel free trade hurts prety much all nations it touch. CHeap Subsidize American grains has destroyed farms in third world country, and they are unable to feed themselves. We on the other hand are losing jobs. Large corporations use Free trade as a way to rape and pillage and to violate local laws. The only countries I see coming ahead economically, is China and maybe India. I question how much their lives have improved, since they pollution their is so overwhelming, that even the Chinese don't trust their food source.
I am horrified that our Medical personal are beginning to be outsourced. SOme X-ray are read in India, and I believe the Indians are breaking our law by having unlicense Radiologist read them and having a license Radiologist sign it off. In England, Pap smears are shipped to India to be read. We are shipping people to have medical treatment in Mexico. I don't trust third world countries touching anything medically related, because their laws are poorly enforce, and we are less capable to ensure Medical work overseas meet our high standards. People keep saying labor is so cheap overseas, but alot of work is being sent out that is technically demanding. We can't trust colleges from foreign countries. In the Philipines, it's easy to buy a college degree. In India, we are finding that their is a lack of accreditation of colleges, and some of the colleges lack resources to properly train their students.
I am horrifed that we are shipping Finacial information to third world countries. I had a Philipino friend, who had a lot of false charges made on her credit card. ALl of them made in the Philipines, despite the fact she hadn't gone back for over a year. She got a refund, but latter on a seperate issue, she called the card service line and found a Philipino answering. SHe was happy about hearing from a countrymen, until I mention that this is how those false credit charges was made. Enforcement of the law is lax in many of these countries, and we aer sending sensitive information to be processed in these countries. My friend admits that crime is extremely high in the Phillipines.
I see The Rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer, and on the top of my reason why this is happening is Free trade.
edit: As for the immigration part of the issue, I was told its the main reason that illegal immigrants are coming in increasing numbers. Many illegal immigrants on this site claim that Nafta cause the Mexican Economy to crash and is their rationalization of why they broke the law to come here. Mexicos dependence on American Corn might even cause a huge wave to come here this year.
NAFTA has been a disaster. Our trade policy has been a disaster under Dems or Repubs. Unions are too weak or held in such low esteem that they can't do much about it. However, I will say that even conservatives are waking up to the reality that while the rich get richer and the poor poorer, the system is starting to stink, and we're seeing the filthy rich and the downright stinking filthy obscenely rich. With bad trade policies allowing the rich to outsource, and illegals taking the jobs that can't be shipped to China, this pressure cooker is about to blow.
