3 million dollars to build a mile of fence? Are they crazy? Give the money to me and I’ll put up a fence?

COLUMBUS, N.M. (AP) - The 1.5-mile barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border was designed to keep cars from illegally crossing into the United States. There's just one problem: It was accidentally built on Mexican soil. Now embarrassed border officials say the mistake could cost the federal government more than $3 million to fix.

The barrier was part of more than 15 miles of border fence built in 2000, stretching from the town of Columbus to an onion farm and cattle ranch.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman said the vertical metal tubes were sunk into the ground and filled with cement along what officials firmly believed was the border. But a routine aerial survey in March revealed that the barrier protrudes into Mexico by 1 to 6 feet.

James Johnson, whose onion farm is in the disputed area, said he thinks his forefathers may have started the confusion in the 19th century by placing a barbed-wire fence south of the border. No one discovered their error, and crews erecting the barrier may have used that fence as a guideline.

"It was a mistake made in the 1800s," Johnson said. "It is very difficult to make a straight line between two points in rugged and mountainous areas that are about two miles apart."

The Mexican government was notified and did what any landowner would do: They sent a note politely insisting that Mexico get its land back.

"Our country will continue insisting for the removal (of the fence) to be done as quickly as possible," the Foreign Relations Department said in a diplomatic missive to Washington.

When the barrier was built in 2000, the project was believed to cost about $500,000 a mile. Estimates to uproot and replace it range from $2.5 million to $3.5 million.

Michael Friel, the spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said the barrier was "built on what was known to be the international boundary at the time." He acknowledged the method used was "less precise than it is today."
Oh. That’s so that our government will need to use - I mean, waste - some more of our hard earned tax dollars to take down the fence, lest the US get sued by Ma’heco.. See, that will offset and delay building the fence for some more time

Answer:
There should be a nice letter sent back to Mexico with a very clear statement, When you remove your people that don't belong here on OUR land then we will be glad to move OUR fence to let you have YOUR land back, we will await your letter explaining in detail when we will expect to be rid of YOUR illegal people for we can remove OUR fence and then you will get YOUR land back.
Thank you,
USA
if you're gonna build a fence, make sure you put it on the right side first

lol
Man, that's a lot of muffins.
What a joke. LOL
I say give it to that company out of California that rebuilt the I-80 bridges that collapsed in that earthquake years back, and recently rebuilt an on/off ramp that collapsed a few months back. They could have it done, and I believe in-penetrable in half the time, with a bonus on top of that. Any U.S government business with a no-bid contract will always screw the Americans over. They remind me of the employees at the DMV offices. #1 called - 10 minutes of assisting #1 - finish - 15 minutes of break-time. and repeat.
With that kind of money couldn't the US buy that land instead?! And who notified the Mexican government? They should have waited until they noticed this themselves (which might have never happened).
Would someone please take each member of the Mexican government and tie its tail to a member of the U.S. government, throw each pair over a clothes line? When you do, please tell me so I can watch?

Really inspires faith in your Government, guess we were correct in not trusting them on Immigration reform.
Why should the taxpayers have to cough up the money from a mistake our government bureaucrats made? Take it out of the foreign aid money to Mexico. The wealthiest man on earth lives in Mexico. Let him aid Mexico.

Read this brief article and you will see that Mexico believes that the US days are numbered as the sole powerhouse. This is what we get for aiding Mexico and its illegals in our country.

I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of sending money to a country who is not doing their part in taking their people back. If Mexico can't do their part, then no more aid!

Where is the accountability in this? How about the fines that these illegals are supposed to pay for coming to the US illegally? How about the companies who are hiring them? Let them cough up the money.

Enough is enough. I think it's time that the US citizens demand an investigation into US government spending and demand an accountability - starting at the top.

Mexico has made it clear to the US that they will not stop the drug problems from the cartel in their country if we don't supply them with aid. What is Mexico doing besides robbing the US? Where are their law enforcement officials along the border? Why is their country breaking the law and the US is being penalized? This is insanity!

From what I have read, a super maximum security fence like Israel has would cost 8B-16B US Dollars for 2000 miles.

Since we, the Legal US Citizens/Residents pay over 80B US Dollars each year for Illegal Aliens and their Social Services, the fence would be quite a bargain.
