If im legal do you rasicsts still demand I learn english?
In japan, students have to learn english because of american influence. In france they have all roadsigns in english french and chineese. In china its all english and russian and french and japaneese. Im sick of people thinking that the US is the ONLY country in the world where people can only speak other languages. Many elderly italian citizens now in the US dont know english. Int he north east. So quit bitching.
Answer:
Whether you like it or not English is the international language of business. It is accepted all over the world. Learning the language of the country you choose to live in is just the smart thing to do. It makes your life easier as well as the people you have to deal with on a daily basis. It has nothing to do with race.
I concur. We should be encouraging people to learn as many languages as possible because it is good for the mind and our economic competitiveness.
Anyone who does not want their children to learn languages is a bad parent in my book.
You need to learn English so you can communicate with other Americans. It could also help with your spelling.
2 pts!
I know a lot of elderly Italian citizens.. and EVERY one of them speaks English.
If you're forced to resort to lies and the failed "if you oppose crime you're a racist" argument.. why even bother trying?
No. Now I'm demanding you shut up about the racists cr@p now.
Explain to me how thinking that immigrants, legal or otherwise learn English is racist. When you can do that logically and not have your idiot answerers yelling viva la cockroach then we can have answers. Real answers.
We Americans demand that you use English, I really don't care what your race is,speak it or get out.
Nope. I only demand that you not expect ME to speak SPANISH.
Why can't most Americans go to college?!?!?
By your own punctuation and grammar, I'd say you never went, so..
You are BADLY misinformed.
Have you actually ever been to France? The road signs are in French only.
About learning English: by NOT learning the prevalent language of a country, you confine yourself to a sub-culture which is viewed by the majority as "sub-standard". Is this right? Does it matter if it's right? It's just the way it is.
And yes, JAPANESE students learn English as a SECOND language in Japan. It therefore stands to reason that non-English speaking immigrants to the US learn English as a SECOND language.
It has little to do with racism and a lot to do with integrating the community you wish to join, as a courtesy as well as an effort to communicate.
There are many many americans that DO know spanish. But we arent going to pay signs in spanish for you, for forms in spanish for you and for translators in spanish for you, some do it now.. it will stop.
So you either learn english and have more opportunities , or you dont and you limit your opportunities... which do you want.
By the way my grandfather moved to the USA from Italy lived in the USA for 70 years and died at 94 and I never saw him ever once fly an Italian flag, but he did have an American flag.
So all these Italians your talking about , well I have never met any. My grandfather never spoke Italian out in public. only at home or in private gatherings.
I totally agree with you 100% dude i also agree with the mexican chick too
We use language as a tool for communication. If with only one language you can communicate to friends, family, and community, then why would you even need to bother learning another language unless you're moving to another location where you need to know another language?
I lived in Hong Kong for a while, I learned Cantonese.
I lived in Japan for a while, I learned Japanese.
I'm an American, I speak English.
As for the old Italians in the North East...guess what, they do know English, because when they became citizens you had to be able to speak, understand, read and write English to become a citizen.
Now, I realize that it's fashionable to call everyone who's opinion differs from you a racist (spending too much time listening to liberals I see) because it stirs up emotions in people, but, all it does is prove your ignorance and your own bigotry.
when an individual comes in to a country i think one should feel compelled to learn its language if you're going to live there. Hence you live in the United States so you should learn English, IF i lived in Brazil i would learn how to speak Portuguese, as simple as that!!!
you damned right we demand you learn English, and if you don't want to then get your **** out of our country, and yes we did take a lot of it from Mexico, if we had not it would be the same as Mexico is today, and then you wouldn't want to come here , you would just stay where you came from. so don't give me this ****, any way the American gov, paid Mexico for the land they took, and paid a fair price for it at the time, so if you want to come to America then learn the language, and that goe's for every one else who wants to come to our country, Mexico, has English language classes and we also have them here so the only excuse you have is you are very dumb. and the main reason moer whites don't go to college is that they can't support the lazy welfare pool and have enough left to go to college on.
ya hablo espanol. aprende ingles, maricon. it is my option to learn another language, not your right to force me to do so. my children will likely speak more than three languages but not because some fuckin illegal beaner was to re*tarded to learn english, it will because they WANT to learn some other babble. as long as we are here in America, we have the right to only speak english.
If you are coming over here, this means that there is a problem in your country. Now, Mexico is a big country with many beautiful places, I think what you need to do is for you to get advice and help from us so you could have a great and happy country. The Mexican people need to get together and also get help from the people in the U.S. so they can turn Mexico around and make it the place that it should be. A great place to live, to work in, a place to go on vacation and a place where you can raise your family and live a happy life
I learned english, didn't kill me! Yes, it's how you blend in!
Glitterbabe is a biatch, SHE SHOULD go home!! One mexican to another!
I've heard that it is because English is one of the easiest language to learn, and I do agree look at president Bush he speak it very well.
If I go to live and work in an another country, then I learn their language.
If you come to live and work in my country, you learn my language.
It really is that simple.
Congratulations, however, clearly you are reasonably proficient in the English language as it is. Although you could brush up on some of your spelling.
If you are legal, welcome.
Well, I can't speak for the racists. May a non-racist answer?
[Sorry, I don't listen to Radio La Raza]
I went to Taiwan, learned Chinese in 6 months. Did they force me? No, I but I felt silly not knowing what everyone was saying so I bought a couple of dictionaries and got after it. Bugged people to death with questions and they respected me for it. As did I for their help. I even moved to a town with almost no native English-speakers so it'd be impossible to even ask where the bathroom was unless I could ask in Chinese.
The language issue (along with Plyler v Doe) are probably the 2 most perplexing issues of this debate. The real question most of us are asking is: "Why NOT learn English?!"
Other than "I don't feel like it", there aren't many answers.
I have so many friends from so many countries and ALL speak English when they come here.
More importantly, my Latino friends - journalists, engineers, lecturers - all agree and many give speeches on the topic - that the greatest handicap to Latino Americans is their refusal to learn English.
They tell kids: [paraphrase] "If you want to grow up to dig ditches, then refuse to learn English...if you want a better life, gain a command of it - better than all your white, yellow and black brothers and sisters here."
Makes sense to me!
qwerty
Wow, so the majority of Americans are now racists? When did this happen?
The simple matter is that you not learning English only hurts you. It becomes a communication barrier that will pen you into a sub-culture and will likely hurt you ability to be competitive in the US market. Don't learn English. But don't expect me to pat tax money to make Spanish materials available for you.
While we're on racism, here in San Antonio, TX, some (not all) of the most racist people are Hispanic: Watch what happens when a Caucasian male tries dating a Hispanic girl here and tell me there is not racism.
If I were to move to India, not only must I learn their language, I must also have my body covered - everything except for my eyes...
When in Rome, do as the Romans.
I fully believe if you want to give up your country for another, you HAVE to learn the language and their way of living - OR - stay where you are.
If I moved to Mexico I would learn Spanish. If I moved to Japan I would learn Japanese. If I moved to Italy I would learn Italian. I think its more of a respect for the country your are living in or vi sting. I would try to learn a tad even if I visited those countries. I know enough Spanish to get by in Mexico, I am a guest in there country I should be accommodating to them. English should not have be to a dominant language in other countries besides the US. I want to have respect for the people and there culture especially when I am there in turf.
I don't really care if you personally learn or not, I am not interested in learning Spanish. I am learning Hungarian and would love to understand French. In Europe most people do speak several languages and English is very popular. You speak about elderly people,if you don't work, who cares what language you speak?
If I plan on living in a country then I plan on learning the language. Its not up to the country to accommodate me.
I have friends that are planning on retiring in Costa Rica, they have been taking Spanish lessons at the local college, which they are paying for, unlike the English classes that you don't have to pay for.
