But I agree that those kind of sentiments of 'if I'm nice to them they'll be nice to me' does make us patsys for those who think that is a sign of stupidity to take advantage of.

No, load of rubbish. Things fell apart in South Africa because a white minority kept a black majority in check through fear and repression. When that system collapsed it was clearly going to take at least two generations before the country could stabilise itself. Look at the USA - slavery was ended in 1865 but the economic equality of blacks and whites has not yet been fully achieved.
