Issued US Passports are usually valid for 10 years. When you order the passport always ask for the thicker booklet with more pages in it just in case you have to travel to many foreign countries who use big stamps consuming alot of space. I know about this because I have travelled alot and have had to renew passports many times. The passport office may now charge for the heavy traveler, thicker booklet but it is worth it given the existing problems at the Agency and the new travel rules.
