I doubt Lott hired any of the workers. He hired a general contractor, who probably hired several sub-contractors. Lott probably never even seen the workers.
Instead of going for cheap, political points, why not make a strong case for your position on immigration?
These politicians get attacked when they really have nothing to do with the hiring of these workers. He probably had no idea they were illegal immigrants.
Are you sure that he personally hired the illegals ? In all probability, he contracted to a general contractor to have his house either rebuilt or repaired. If that general contractor had men working for him who were illegals, Lott might not have even known it.
At any rate, if the above is the case, Lott did not hire illegals - - the contractor did.
Mr. Lott is not responsible for the contractor who hires illegal aliens. He no doubt hired a contractor to do the repair work and if you will check your statistics the amount of illegal immigrants in the construction business is very high.
Unless Mr. Lott had first hand knowledge that the Contractor hired illegal immigrants its a non issue.
He's not 'against illegal aliens' in fact before the debates he was in favor of the Senate Bill in concept but wanted amendments. If it ever comes back and Republicans get to put forth their amendments, I expect him to vote for it in a final vote count (or at least I think the odds are 50/50.) He just stood with Republicans that they should get the chance to offer as many amendments as the Democrats were given in the Republican controlled Senate last year. I'm an anti, and I assure you we don't feel we can count on him.
