Please help me, How do I protect myself from this?
Answer:
Here is information on what to do if you think someone else is using your SSN, and how to apply for a new one if necessary: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10064.html...
That social security number is going to be yours forever. Call the police.
You better talk to the police first and find out for sure. Then take action from there/
How can I report that someone is using my Social Security number?
You should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by:
* Internet— www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites...
* Telephone— 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338)
* TTY— 1-866-653-4261
You can call the Social Security # (in the front government pages in your phone book) and tell them that you believe that your info has been stolen, but in order to protect yourself you will either have to confront the person if you know who it is or turn it over to the authorities.
Call the police for starters. I don't remember what we had to all go through, but it is quite a bit of red tape. Unfortunately, nothing was resolved really. The woman who stole our identity is still using it, and has secured cards for her female relatives to do the same. The detectives just shrugs and lift up their hands. They know where she is at also. <sighs>
First off you really need to make sure this is ture. You should run a credit report first. That way you can see if there is something on your credit report that doesn't match up. Look for accounts that you never opened. ( you should contact all 3 credit reporting agencies) You can get a 3-in-1 credit report online. It's super easy here's the link:
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/cred...
Second you should put a fraud alert on your credit report! You should do this today! Call this TransUnion (it's a credit reporting agceny) and select that you want to put a fraud on your account just follow the instructions:
1-800-680-7289 - transunion
Third if you find there are things on your credit report that you never opened but it shows that you owe money. First thing you should do is have on hand what accounts you actually opened.
Fouth contact your State General's Attorney's office. They would handle fraud victim cases. They would be handeling your case.
What state are you in?
You are able to get a new SS card. What you need is accurate records of what accounts are really yours.
Also you really need to make sure that are certain this person is actually doing this. Get your credit report and put fraud alters. If this person is really doing this then contact your State Attorney's Gerneral's office. Police really don't do the work on these type of cases, it's handled by the State Attorney's Office.
Thanks for the question, and the links people.
call the social security office if proven and needed to they will change the number...
Definitely contact a lawyer and local law enforcement. A lot of people have posted the right links to look at online...
Good luck honey... I really hope you get things straightened out...
Very difficult to change your social security number.
Contact the SSA and your local Police Department.
Put fraud check on your credit reports.
Good luck, unfortunately you will need it.
