Moving to the United States from Canada?
To put my mind at ease I just need to know the things I need to do in order for all of this to work!
Answer:
You won't be able to cross the border with a moving truck full of stuff and the intent to stay without the correct visa or other residence permit, and if you try, it's quite possible that you could face further inspection each and every time you try to cross the border. You need to get a visa first, and then deal with moving. K1 (fiance) visas tend to have short processing times, and would allow you to move to the US and get married. Alternatively, as a Canadian, you may be eligible for a NAFTA (TN) visa, once you find a job. TN visas are limited to certain fields, but are very easy to get (far less involved than H1B) and cheaper as well.
My condolences...

Yes. I think there is more research involved, but the reverse -an american marrying a canadian in canada - worked differently for some friends. They had to get married and then return to their countries of origin for six months before the could live together in order to comply with some legal stipulation.
This will prove to be a test of your guys commitment to eachother. Believe me, I've gone through this and so has a good friend of mine.
If you do try to cross the border with a moving truck full of stuff, or even just come in with nothing and say you're ''moving'' to the states, you will immediately be pulled aside and asked to show either a valid Resident Alien card, meaning you're already married and have waited the required time to get your documents, or that you've applied for and been granted a fiance visa, which also takes a substantial amount of time.
If you don't have either of these they will turn you back at the border. Your best bet for quick entry is to just go in as a tourist, marry your boyfriend, and stay in the country until you get your papers straight, then go back and get your stuff. If you don't mind waiting, then go ahead and apply for your papers and wait it out, but it can take more than 6 months once the papers are filed, and filing those papers takes a long time in itself. You need police reports, medical exams, interviews with homeland security, even proof that you've known eachother and established a relationship.
Hope that helps, good luck.
Before you move here, it would be wise to get all your ducks in a row..Go to the American ambassy in Canada and get information the information you need to come here legally...Best of luck!
You will need to get a K-1 visa for a fiance. Last year, they were taking about 6 months to get. Go to the USCIS website - all of the forms are available on that site.
I wouldn't try to bring all of your stuff with you across the border. You can come into the US for 6 months as a visitor, but you will be unable to work and if the process is not complete at the end of your six months, you will either need to leave or request an extension.
You will need a spouse visa.
Go to uscis.gov for details.
I heard about Canadians moving to Mexico, but never heard about Canadians moving to USA!
