If 80% of the jobs in the U.S. require a high school diploma when will the quota get filled for the other 20%?

The United States is a modern industrialized country that requires educated people to fill modern jobs.

80% of the jobs in the U.S. require that a minimum of a high school diploma has been achieved by the job applicant.

When I go to WalMart, I don't see that many people who seem to have achieved that level of education.

How many million jobs does that other 20% represent and haven't we just about reached our quota for that segment of job openings?

Answer:
And what 50... 60% require a college degree?
I don't think so.

It's not that the job requires that, the employer requires that. I'd say it's the other way around. 80% of jobs could be filled by people without a diploma.

For one thing, a diploma or degree is not an accurate reflection of knowledge or intelligence. Especially with this 'no child left behind' crap. And you're right, many people don't seem to have even achieved such a level of education, even in jobs where a diploma is 'required.' Something is wrong when places like Wal-Mart are more concerned with employee theft than they are about customer theft.

I still remember when you could walk into a Radio Shack and whoever worked there knew something about practically everything in the store and if you were looking for some off the wall electronic part or product they knew exactly what you were talking about and if they had it, where it was.

On the flip side, I personally would not be hired for countless jobs that I am more than qualified for simply because I haven't bothered wasting my time and money with getting a college degree. I have the credits equal to an associates, but since the college changed the curriculum around a couple times I didn't have all the 'right' credits to qualify for a degree. Why should I bother? Just to 'get a good job'? I currently have the best job there is, it's called self-employed. I've been penalized in past jobs by not making what I necessarily should just because of lacking a piece of paper that is no reflection whatsoever on my knowledge, intelligence or skills. I happen to have an IQ in the 'genius' range and my qualifications and knowledge in my specific area of the IT field are above average, IMHO. But what does that really mean? The whole system is bass ackwards?
I think if people would focus more on doing what they enjoy and are good at, rather than trying to get a 'job' (aka Just Over Broke) the country as a whole could be more prosperous and 'unemployment' would be relatively non-existant.
As it is corporations control the market, along with the largest employers in the country, the State and Federal governments. There is hardly any such thing as a free-market in this country anymore. I believe this is mainly due to the fact that it's very difficult to be independent with all the restrictions, burdens, and various costs imposed by government.
well not all jobs require much "education" as they are sometimes just even basic trained skills or habits of doing that they dont require maybe a high school diploma and there are plenty of people even with ocllege diplomas that may not be very well "achieved" even though they have it..its just paper :) cant judge a person soley on what they have in terms of paperwork
Deathtrooper69, you're absolutely correct. It's not that the jobs require a diploma...employers are just demanding them. People are capable of performing the job without diplomas.
