If I go to university in the US on a student visa, am I allowed to stay after university?
Answer:
Doubtful. If you remain a student you could probalby renew it ad infinitum, but if you applied for a permanent visa after being here in a student visa they would probalby grant it. Your relatives could sponsor me as well, you've got a good chance.
UNC is a good school- my sister is there. Duke is good too, but a lot more pricey.
It is not impossible to get a work visa (not perm residence) after University but you may want to manage your credits so you finish in 3 1/2 years so you graduate when the H1B visas or whatever are available (they run out later in the year.) You will have to find a sponsoring employer etc while in college however. Then you can apply for permenant residency while on a work visa, but it takes longer because so many want them.
Check with immigration for the straight scoop, but this is what I have read is the case.
No, unfortunately, if you come to the US on a student visa it makes you automatically ineligible to adjust status to any sort of immigrant status. You cannot stay - the terms of the student visa require that you return to Canada.
The only way to work here and possibly get a green card is to get a company to sponsor you for a H1 visa.
Bye - bye from Canada - Joseph.
