American. since they are...and so many are so Americanized in a way that they are unlike folks from Mexico.

Usually it depends on what they consider themselves... it bothers me when a Chicano waves a Mexican flag and rants and raves about how proud he is of his country of origin... if Mexico is so great why come here?... I do not ask that they be ashamed of where they come from only that they realize they are lucky to be here (just as I am lucky to have been born here) and that they work at being a productive member of the American society (which happens to be a very inclusive society by the rest of the worlds standards)...

I guess it all depends on where he was born.
If the Chicano is an American citizen, he/she is American.
If the Chicano is a Mexican citizen, he/she is Mexican.

A person with the desendence of mexican but not born in mexico but in the U.S.A chicano is not people from latin america but only people with mexican desendence in born in the USA.

That vato over there says he is chicano but his parents were born in El Salvador. That means he is not chicano because his parents must be form Mexico and he must have been born in the United States to be a chicano

I prefer "American", "legal resident", or "illegal". If they are "illegal", they need to go home.
I consider it part of the "are they Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos..." debate that I personally find annoying. They're Hispanics, all of them. If they're US Citizens then they're Americans.
