I'm interested in hearing about what life was like in Somalia before the government fell apart. What kind of houses people lived in in the countryside, did kids go to school, what was that like etc.? Also I would be interested in hearing what it was like to immigrate to the US from Somalia, how did you do it, what was difficult?

I went to Berbera, Somalia in the spring of 1981. I was serving in the US Navy. We were going to do an amphibious exercise in the Gulf of Aden and stopped at Berbera. We anchored about a mile off the beach and took liberty boats to the shore.

I'm telling you, it wasn't even the 3rd World. Everything was the same shade of brown. The heat was unbearable and flies covered everything that didn't move. There was nothing that looked like a store, although one old guy was selling half liter bottles of Coke (warm) for $5 each.
