If you have an immigrant visa you should receive your greencard within the next few weeks after arriving in the US. And unless you had peperwork filled out to automatically apply for the SSN you could apply for it when you get the greencard.

I am a Canadian citizen and it took me 8 months. However, the time will depend on who you are applying through (family, employer, etc.) and other factors such as if you currently hold another type of visa, your relationship to the family member you are applying through (ex. spouse, sibling, child, etc.), if you have anything in your background that is questionable, or if you make any mistakes on an application or don't do it just right, it will be held up. I think 8 months is about the quickest you can get it...but you will get a temporary visa after 3 months.
