What the boobs don't understand is this:
Our border with Mexico is 1,950 miles long. It is impossible to build a fence along that border. In addition, ranchers, cattlemen and others on both sides of the border use the land and it is crossed daily in the normal workday by many who own land or live near the border.
If a fence WAS built, there is still some 12,000 miles of unguarded coastline in the continental U.S. Someone in Matamoros, where the "fence" would have to end, could row a boat in an hour to an unguarded Gulf of Mexico beach and be here. Same thing with the western border with California.
It is unrealistic to believe that a fence will stop the flow of people who are desparate. If you build it 20 feet high and top it with razor wire, someone will build a 22 foot ladder - or will blow it up.
They also fail to understand that commerce in the U.S. depends upon this cheap labor force. It has been this way for 100 years. The government knows this and is not about to impede the flow.
I am pushing 70 and have seen this same issue raise it's ugly head every 20 years or so with the same old rhetoric, the same nonsense "solutions" and the same racism. The ONLY thing that has ever happened is amnesty.
It isn't possible to find, roundup and deport 12 million people. That is more people than the combined population of Colorado, Arizona and Nevada; more than the entire country of Denmark. We can't even find the "FBI's Ten Most Wanted" and their pictures are everywhere.
Most people just run off at the mouth with their brain totally disengaged from the process. If they would stop and THINK, they would ask themselves some hard questions and know that fences, minefields, towers, militia, National Guard, vigilantes are "pie-in-the-sky" stuff. Our present government will say anything to divert our citizens from the real and most dangerous issue that our country faces - the war in Iraq and the devistation it has caused to not only Iraq but to our own.

it's apples and oranges. half of a city wanted freedom, and the allies had to figure out how to make a city work. i know it's highly simplified, but it's not a sovereign nation trying to stop an ILLEGAL invasion.

What the pro-wall/fence people forget also, is that a wall/fence designed to keep poeple out, also keeps people in!
I remember a couple of years ago, schwarzenegger let it slip that what he wants to see (remember his grandfather designed concentration camps during hitler's nazi reign of terror) is California's borders closed, then he caught himself, and said, "Oh, I meant we need to secure our borders."

The Berlin Wall was setup to keep the people of Berlin in not those who are outside Berlin from coming in.
The crossing of the boarder into the US is a crime and staying is a CRIME.
Considering now we are living with the additonal danager of people coming here to kill us. I think it is reasonable defensive move.
Here's the big difference. They shot anyone trying to get out. See, if Mexico was a communist nation and people were trying to leave and they were, without question, shot and killed for trying to escape tyranny..how can you not see the difference?

BTW: If the minute men can shoot anyone crossing the border why are two US border patrol Guards sitting in jail right now for shooting an armed drug smuggler? Where do you get this stuff from?

actually, they are right...it was built in-part to keep westerners out. you can find that in most history books as for the minefields etc, it has been noted in congressional records that some congressmen specifically in western states and several right-wing pundits have wanted to fortify the border with mines.
oh, i can see this happening now...that wall will be built and some latin american leader, probably hugo chavez will come to the border and say: "mr. president, if you believe in freedom then mr. president tear down this wall!" or, more to the point: "sr. presidente, si usted cree en la libertad, después Sr. presidente rasgan abajo esta pared!"

Actually human dynamics is my field. The physical, if superficial, difference appears to be…they (Russians, well, the Soviets really) were trying to keep people in and we (the god fearin country founded up upon Christian principles, whatever that might be) is a tryin ta keep folks, (“spicks”, “wet backs” substitute any pejorative term of your choice, out.
From a psychological standpoint…The mind set behind justifying any wall to control the behavior of humans is exactly the same.
The mentality exhibited by the ‘wall response’ is simplistic, challenged, and generally uninformed and is expert at using a particular defense mechanism in response to criticism from better informed individuals, namely, denial.
There is an agreed upon a three part division of the human brain, the reptilian (the oldest part of our brain but still responsible for certain mental responses, the WALL), in our modern brain), the Linbic, a later development (see the suggested web site) and the modern brain or cerebral cortex.

The site will explain, superficially, how modern research divides the brain and the function of the various parts but I’m referring to the evolution of our brain. The development of the frontal cortex is probably what extincted our European fellow travelers on planet earth, the Neanderthal. His brain was larger than ours and he was stronger but our (modern humans, Homo Sapiens Sapiens), brain processed information differently, more efficiently.
Obviously, not all modern humans have well developed frontal cortexes as faulty reasoning, such as much of what we witness in government these days, appears to be alive and well.

Are you insane? The minutemen are not armed and don't have permission to shoot anyone. They only call the border patrol when they see people crossing the border illegally.
Germany was one country that was divided in half.Mexico is not part of the USA. We have every right to put a wall up if we wish to.
The Berlin Wall was built and used as a symbol to keep the East Berliners from seeing the West. The difference is this: The Soviets did not allow under any circumstances for East Berliners to immigrate west. The US allows people to immigrate here, but you can't break the law doing it! There's a big difference.
