How about pushing our borders to the Panama canal?

There are a huge amount of natural resources south of our current border, the Illegal immigrant problem would mostly disappear, the border at the canal is a fraction the size of out current border.

Answer:
...and let's just ignore these are soveriegn nations with their own rules and laws, i mean, who cares about that, right?
Because then we would have to take all the very poor, crime-ridden countries, and our economy would be ruined.
just make mexico the 51 st state hell we got most of the population here illeagally anyway ha
gjkishere, they ignore OUR rules and laws...so whats the difference? Mexico has many resources including oil.but because of their mismangement, their people suffer...this is another reason why I say send them back home, so they can fix their own problems...I also suspect that the reasons that Congress is pushing this bill is because of the Interest China has in Mexican resources.
Very good idea.
Then we would have a ton of states.
How about we just enforce the current immigration laws that our elected officals swore to do when they took office but have failed to do. Then we don't have to worry about pushing the borders anywhere.
Why not just annex Mexico and rid them of their current government. We could build the infrastructure in that area and get the people treated running water. It is pretty obvious that the level of corruption in their government is obsene. Goverments are supposed to work for their people, not themselves. It sickens me to watch these pigs treat their people like they do. I am no means for letting people cross into our country illegally but lets just be done with this. Make Mexico the next state. No spin...we are paying for them now. We are fighting drug cartel now.
sure then we can fight the drug cartels and raise taxes even more to pay for all the social programs for the uneducated people down there
You must definitely be philosophing to another level, or you must be on something really mindboggling for someone to issue a comment like that.

As someone said you would have to annex at least 9 different countries.

From a military standpoint you don't even have enough troops to establish an occupation army that big; or did the thought of an armed conflict passed through your mind when you reached your conclusion?

As is with the US economy at a low point you simply don't have the resources to conduct such an activity.

Now, if you're worried about the immigrant problem, the only difference that extending a border would be that all those persons would now become US Citizens, therefore the will just migrate anyways, just legally now, so a population displacement would take effect anyways, and now it will be legal. So you would end up with a lot of people looking for work in more developed places in your new country. So no real solution there.

A real solution would be to provide assistance, training, techonology development, etc. to bring those countries closer to a 1st. world standard vis a vis like the US, Japan, the EU, and all the rest of the G7 countries, so that migrating becomes less attractive, and at a fraction of the cost.
No, for the same reason we don't want the 'Security and Prosperity Partnership'. WE'd be the one funding their prosperity and our schools would be flooded by their poor even more than they are now. In a perfect world every child would have a good education. However, I am not willing to further ruin education for our children by ignoring limits on our services.
First and foremost Hugo Chavez would flip to the point of war. Even though Venezuela is to the south of the Panama Canal Chavez has a huge influence on that area.
The U.S.A. utilized New School madraza style training camps to spread terror throughout Latin America and any further incursion into this territory would be seen as a renewed form of imperialistic overthrow.
