Why does the US allow schools to be named in Spanish. What's this saying to non-hispanics?
Why are we allowing this? Since the name of the school is in Spanish, are other kids of color allowed there or is it just for Hispanics?
Answer:
Everyone seems to be missing the point. This is not a good thing in my eyes. Just like they have made that schools name Spanish (which has nothing to do with a famous person or event), they will make Spanish the number one language in that school. I wish everyone would stop trying to hide behind the truth. If there were 12 to 20 million Africans or Haitians illegally coming to the U.S., even the illegals would be trying to send them back home. This is the United States of America & it should be appreciated as such! No amnesty! Deport all illegals!!!
What about Booker T. Washington and such...are only African-Americans allowed there?
if the people of the area are mostly Hispanic, why wouldn't they be named in Spanish? everyone identifies with their own culture closer, after all
I don't go to links I'm not sure of, however the "ethnically correct" thing is something that has just surfaced within the past 10 years. Prior to that, and all the years of our country no one ever questioned that sort of thing. What is this saying to non-hispanics? It's saying get a life and everyone stop complaining and starting problems.
Spanish in Texas has nothing to do with Mexico. Texas was actually Spanish territory.
maybe in El Paso, where probaly 90% are mexican! but where I live they would not dare to try!!! The school board would be impeached like Clinton
Ok, this one is really murky to me. On one hand, schools should not cater to one specific ethnic group. On the other hand, we have lots of places that bear names in other languages, are named for people of different cultures, etc. There are Jewish, French, Polish, Italian, Native Indian, etc., names everywhere.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the name doesn't matter as much as the intent. If its just recognizing a culture by name, its ok. If its exclusively FOR a certain culture, its not.
Oh come on! now your just nitpicking..
Can I ask you this?
Why is there such a school as the Harlem School of Arts?
Harlem is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan, long known as a major black cultural and business center. After being associated for much of the twentieth century with black culture, but also crime and poverty, it is now experiencing a social and economic renaissance.
Why would we have such a school? BECAUSE it is great for minorities to thrive and be in a safe environment that promotes learning and the arts! The same applies to this school..Get over it, for me its about minorities being allowed to thrive, what does it matter the name of the school?
I would welcome schools of different cultures and diversities here in El Paso..What about the El Paso Jewish Academy? I have never heard outrage from the community because we have a school who caters to Jews..Have you? Truth is, no body cares, get over it!
And again, you have no clue! In Mexico City, there are schools for the families from Spain, Poland, Jewish Schools, Lebanese, Chinese, including the United States and the list goes on and on.
How ignorant are you? LOL
California, Montana, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona - all named before this country became the United States of America - duh - you think there's a reason for that?
Oops - almost forgot - Tejas!
I don't have a problem with the name, seeing 3/4 of California's names are Spanish long before our immigration problem.
I do however have a problem if they offer Spanish as primary language.
That's funny. Most words come from Latin too.
I thought that schools were named after historical heroes, regardless of what language their name was.
What is this saying you ask? That heroes come in all colors, and speak different languages.
Julio Cesar Chavez? THE BOXER? Or do you mean Cesar Chavez the advocate of worker's rights?
Sometimes schools are re-named after significant donations too...University departments are named after big donors sometimes.
let's all point and scream LA INMIGRACION!
What does the name of the school have to do with anything? We have a Roosevelt, is that only for Presidents? How about St Marys? Only for saints? This question made me shake my head in disbelief.
Come on it, you know full well that schools are named based on the cultural significance.
Just like some areas in California, you'll see street signs in
Chinese (not sure if Mandarin, or Cantonese).
Stop trying to make this a race thing. it's a historically significant thing.
Not all schools will be named after White guys.
You know damn well that anybody is allowed in Public Schools.
What next you wanna change the name of Los Angeles to The Angels just because it's in Spanish, due to the Spanish naming it while under Spanish colonization.
I guess we should rename California, and Arizona, and Texas while were at it.
You say a lot of stupid things for someone who claims to be College educated.
How is it that anyone who makes a valid point against your crap is trying to distort reality and history? You didn't mention how that is, you just attacked me. That shows a lot of education.
and your Trolling on Yahoo, because your unemployed, you said so yourself.
Your a writer. ha ha. Jerk
Yep, and the Booker T. Washington stuff is absurd. Those were Americans and is a lot different than a school name in Spanish that has no relevance. However, I went to "Rancho Buena Vista" High school and never really let it bother me. Yet it's kinda frustrating when I have to think if I spelled the name of my school correctly.
Since that area has a rich cultural background that happens to involve Mexicans(I know you don't want to hear this), the name makes since. There are many towns...oh hell, there is a whole hand full of states in the Southwest with Spanish names.Go and see,I'm sure you'll find people from all ethnicities living in them also.
Nevada
Montana
Colorado
New Mexico
California
Texas
These are the examples of the states that have had Spanish names for the longest time.
How about BUBBA BILLY BOB JOE BEAUDREAU MIDDLE SCHOOL in HALFTRACK, LOUISIANA?
Only for poor ole rednecks like us'n...unless you're poor white trash, you're not allowed to go to school there?
BUBBA BILLY BOB JOE's daddy walks him to school every day because they're in the same 6th grade class room.
wow Terry calm down. Maybe because you live near the boarder and there is a large predominantly Hispanic influence there. What if there was a money donor involved and they had a say in the name? Would that change your frame of mind?
Edit: Tylergrl- be realistic there is no way you could deport them all. The fact is that the illegal immigration issue this country has is WAY out of control. We need to focus our energy in trying to find a solution.
Charter schools need to differentiate themselves from public schools to attract parents to enroll thier children. Lots of gimicks have been used, bi-lingual education is hardly the strangest of them.
"Since the name of the school is in Spanish, are other kids of color allowed there or is it just for Hispanics?"
Oh yes they're allowed sir.
"What's this saying to non-hispanics? "
That the school is named in Spanish and also maybe that the school is predominantly hispanic.
Oh yea and I doubt that "Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe" is a school...that would be a clinic. so yea you don't make sense.
I guess it's sort of OK for schools to be named in Spanish just as long as it says "High School," and not "escuela." I would just be worried that schools like that would start teaching in Spanish which would be a big NO! I've seen schools named in French, etc.
Political Correctness
Rules for Foreigners
This is unreal. Maybe we should adopt some of these rules. Harsh you say?
1. There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools, no special ballots for elections, and all government business will be conducted in our language.
2. Foreigners will not have the right to vote, no matter how long they are here.
3. Foreigners will never be able to hold political office.
4. Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care or any other government assistance programs.
5. Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
6. If foreigners come and want to buy land that will be OK, but options will be restricted. They are not allowed to own waterfront property. That property is reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
7. Foreigners may not protest; no demonstrations, no waving a foreign flag, no political organizing, no "bad-mouthing" our president or his policies. If they do, they will be sent home.
8. If they come to this country illegally, they will be hunted down and sent straight to jail.
Harsh, you say?
The above laws happen to be the immigration laws of Mexico.
When it comes to immigration issues in American, it doesn't seem to matter who you vote for (Rep.or Dem.), both seem to do very little about the problem. We should have immiration laws in America as Mexico does. As the old saying goes, what's good for the goose is good for the gander!
Samia (7 above me), for the most part you are right. However, if our goverment did something more about the problem other than offering lip servce years ago (during the day when Nixon, Ford or Carter were in office), we wouldn't have half the problems we do today with it. As much as I like Mr Bush, he's not doing anything about it other than letting the illegals' have their own way. Clintion sure had no interest in doing anything about the issue either.
