If you file all the papers you shoulded receive a notice saying that they were working on your case. On that paper there should be a receipt number or case number. call immigration and ask them what is going on with your case. give them your case number.

The notice of action has a receipt number, check online the status of your case.
You need to contact USCIS and check the status of your petition. Normally they will send you a letter to let you know they received the petition and another letter letting you know if/when it is approved. If there is a problem with it they will notify you and tell you what it is they need. The only way to know for sure and to check where it is in the process is to contact them and find out.
He needs to come to america and stay, don't let him leave if you really want to be with him. Then file the papers from here. My husband was from the UK and we were given the same advice.
