Which would you rather be called ?
Gringo (feminine, gringa) is a term in the Spanish and Portuguese languages used in some countries of Latin America to refer to foreigners from different cultures, especially from the United States, but also from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and elsewhere, including in some cases other countries of Latin America itself.
Some controversy exists regarding whether gringo is a derogatory term. The American Heritage Dictionary classifies the term as offensive slang.[1] The term gringo does lend itself to derogatory, paternalistic or endearing connotations sometimes, depending on the context and the intent of the user. The enunciation of the word can often give away whether it was meant in a derogatory manner or not. However it is sometimes used toward an American or other english-speaking person who makes little effort to communicate or does so without an accent, mostly in Spain. However, many native speakers who use it do not do so pejoratively. There is also some variation in the connotation of this word from country to country within Latin America. In many Latin American countries it is considered a racial slur.
Answer:

Technically, its kind of like calling someone a crazy foreign f**ker.
At least according to my bi-lingual fiance.
Jefe
I will go with what The American Heritage says about it, And I dont care what the Illegals call me as long as they do it from their own country.
They can call me whatever they want as long as they have a proper Green Card or work permit.
Amiga
Gringo is a derogatory term from South America ( Mexico). Yes, Amigo means friend.
Spanish language is not the same as South American or Cuban (Spanish).
Spanish people think that South American (Spanish) is lower then Gypsies in educational levels.
I'd rather be called an Amiga. It's a more positive opener and it's hard to say it in a nasty tone.
amiga
How about neither?
I am a woman or female...men are that or male. ENGLISH is what the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and the Constitution are all written in. It IS the official language of the USA.
I prefer amigo. Gringo is derogatory, much like s.pic or w.etback.
here's the thing, if they call me a gringo, i will call them a wett bacck. sound fair? if they want respect then they need to give it.
From the other side of the Fence, it wont matter, Legals are
Americans, illegals are not. Gringo is derived from the term
Griego , which means a Greek. Adapted to mean anyone who is a Foreigner.
I want to be called an English word. I am not a gringo I was born here legal as well as my parents and 3 generations back. Illegals are the Gringos.
I'd rather be called friend in English
Call me "Cracker" I don't give a rip...
ma'am works just fine
It all depends on who is saying it and why. I used to live in Hawaii and was called a Howlie.Which is supose to mean foreinger. alot of people use the term in the negative way.
Is there a problem with 'friend'?
Any word can be turned into an insult if you say it as one. Having said that, I've had Hispanic friends call me 'gringo' all my life, and it felt friendly.

strictly speaking, the posts above are correct. In our own country, WE are not foreigners. But I don't thing the people using it think of it that way when they are saying it.
