Those of you whom support the fence; Do you realize?

The United States–Mexico border's total length is 1,951 miles, according to figures given by the International Boundary and Water Commission.

Here is what is being proposed:
Strong Border Barriers: Have installed at least 200 miles of vehicle barriers, 370 miles of fencing, and 70 ground-based radar and camera towers along the southern land border of the United States, and have deployed 4 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and supporting systems.

Not exactly the Chinese Wall here.
This proposal will secure about a third of the border at best. And at what initial cost? Then there are maintenance costs from the time the fence is built until infinity! How tall is the fence? I have a 22 ft ladder in my garage. How will it stop tunneling? Seems to me that the proposed "solution" will not solve anything and will cost more than the problem. Knowing this what are your thoughts? All civilized replies welcome.

Answer:
This is a heated debate here! I DO NOT think it is necessary at all. People will go over and under. Through Texas, they have sophisticated sensors in the water, fields, and night vision, amongst other things utilized for protecting the area. The money proposed is WAY too much that could be used for other things such as health care or to help Veterans. Also to help single parents attain day care!

I do not at all support the fence I so think it is ridiculous to do this fence. The government states it is to block illegal drugs, and for security. Does anyone realize how many drugs are imported through shores and planes? HELLO! There are other ways not just through Mexico. Everything is Mexico this and that.
first your figure are wrong Bush signs into law 700 miles of border double fence last year but Congress didn't fund it.

btw we got technology that can find tunnels?
do anyone know what law they are talking about when they say THE LAW to be enforced ?

It is very interesting to watch anyway.
thanks guys.
Hmmm..well, you may have a 22 ft. ladder but if there was barbed wire on top of the fence I doubt that you would be getting over. They should make the thing out of reinforced concrete which went down 4 feet into the ground...

Israel built a wall and they have had a significant decrease in bombings there...this is no different.
Here's a solution that would be cheap to build i comparison to other wall solutions, and I imagine most of the private land owners along the border will help subsidize it with other donations.

Right at the line, dig a 12 ft deep trench that is 12 foot wide at the top, and 6 ft wide at the bottom with sloping sides. Along the US side of the trench, string the entire wall and 6 ft in with rows of razor wire.

Where the razor wire ends 6 ft from the edge of the trench, a 16' chain link fence with razor wire slanting out facing the Mexican border.

Give enough space for two Humvees to pass through, and then another 16' high chain link fence with razor wire at the top sloping towards Mexico.

Then for 6 feet from that fence leading into the US territory, more rows of razor wire.

Every 100 miles - a sentry post manned by soldiers with a 50 caliber weapon. The 100 miles between patrolled by armed Humvees, manned by National Guard units with shoot to kill orders.

about 100 ft from where the razor wire ends, a station that will automatically grant US citizenship, provided they live to get there.

I believe this would significantly lessen any chance of illegals, terrorists, and drug runners from sneaking in.
please show proof where it shows it will cost more problems.

edit: thanks for the link, did you know illegals are sending 90 billion home a year? in the long run it will be cheaper to fence the border and get all illegals out. legals are welcome to stay.
You are assuming it's a basic fence and all that is needed is a basic ladder to climb over or a shovel to tunnel underneath. There will be electronics involved. Depending on the area the fence is in, there would be section (s) of fence utilizing electronics above, underneath, and above. This is the year 2007.

This is NOT the Great Wall of China of ancient history.

This is IF they ever continue building the wall. But just for the people opposing the wall (if it's ever built) because they think it's so easily defeated.wrong.
No, we want the fence ALREADY passed into law which is longer, rather than to have this bill cut it in half and tell every newspaper dumb enough to listen that it is 'strengthening' border security.

For tunneling they will need geoprobes just as they have now. But tunnels take a while to dig, and the fence slowing the flow will give them more time to geoprobe.

Besides, if you can slow it to trickles from tunnels and ladders, you will be vastly curtailing the flow.

And as to the cost. LOS ANGELES ALONE pays $10 billion for benefits for illegal immigrants every year, and worse, our schools are failing our own children. Once built, the fence, unlike the endless flow, will not be an annually recurring and growing cost.

Those costs are only federal costs. The costs are for schools and health care and other services at the state and local level. http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/blog/j...
It's some physical barrier but there is a virtual fence with sophisticated electronic surveillance. Don't think merely physical wall. It does stop smuggling routes.
Cost should not be a big issue-the tax payer dollar will be put to terrific use for once.

Building a 40 ft. brick wall to cover the length of 1,951 miles to successfully keep mexicans out, is better than having 1,951 miles of barbed wire fencing easy enough to cut with heavy duty pliers...is it not?

Yeah, that's what I thought.
Using your logic, we can't stop all rapes or catch all rapist so should we just make rape legal?
