Awaiting result for my work permit with my current employer (UK). Am I stuck with this employer??!!?
Can I switch employers once I have my work permit or is there a time limit that one is obliged to stay at the employer that assisted with the permit.
My solicitor said I can switch the next day as long as the salary is more and the jobdescription is more or less the same with a new prospective employer. On numerous websites I picked up that one can switch without any problems from the current employer or cancellation of the permit.
I have a possibility of a new job within 2 months, but I'm to scared to take the change and maybe run into trouble with my current employer.
Please help??!!
Answer:
You will be working in breach if you work for an employer who is not listed on your work permit - and I will remove you if i catch you.
Check out the government site: www.workingintheuk.gov.uk

14. How can an overseas national change their employer?
Since work permits are issued for a named person to do a particular job for a specific employer, the new employer will need to get approval from us by applying for a new work permit before the Overseas National can start work.
You can 'download' both e-forms and postal application forms and guidance notes for your own use, at no cost from the 'All forms' section of this website.
You can also get forms and guidance notes by phoning our distribution centre on 0117 344 1471 between 9.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
For most changes of employment applications we will already have details of the person, so you do not need to send evidence of their qualifications and experience.
If you have a solicitor then take their advise or check the goverment website for the latest info on working visas. Dont tell your current employer anything until your new job is set up and you have a work contract signed and sealed. Check your current contract for how much notice you must give your current employer and then do it when the time is right. If you get your facts right then it should all go okay.
As I undrstand it, the answer from Samley is correct. I am presuming that you are already on a work permit issued to your employer, and you are asking for an extension. Work permits are for a specific job with a specific employer. However there are other types of work visa, for example au pair, where you are free to change employer.
If you are a work permit holder, I think you should ask your solicitor to clarify what he has said, as it seems wrong to me.
