Why do americans refer to immigrants as aliens?

It's such an unpleasant word. Your country would not exist without immigrants, as your ancestors derived from Europe. I don't mean to be over-sensitive, but you make them sound as if they aren't even human

Answer:
Its an attempt to dehumanize these people...Its rhetoric, plain and simple..They also LOVE to call them criminals.Look at Paris Hilton, she broke the law several times, who calls her a criminal? Its hypocritical, because this country was founded on immigrants who also came here and plotted themselves on this land, killed the natives and somehow that's NOT criminal.
THEY ARE NOT HUMANS!!!!
Personally, I call them "little brown people" with TB.
If we changed the name, would that mean we still have the right to control our borders.
We don't refer to immigrants as aliens. We refer to il legal's as aliens.they've already broke the law when they flat foot the fence.

Our country was built on rule of law and you've broken the law when you set your il legal feet on our soil...Go home il legal!
Who say "alien" is an unpleasant word

Everyone here in America are aliens include the death and the living

The only people truthly none-aliens are the "American indian" with feather.
Actually, one of the definitions of "alien" is "belonging to a foriegn country or nation." Which has nothing to do with the US. This term would be correctly used in any country. So stop accusing the US of prejudice while doing the same yourself.
Its semantics dude- cut out the PC BS

First and foremost we are a state but also a nation of Americans. We are the longest running democracy in the world and that is attributed to our self determination and our sovereignty. People don't have the right to take away or criticize our self determination and sovereignty.
Some of my fellow Americans are a sour and meanspirited bunch who think they have been disenfranchised and are looking for somewhere to place the blame.

Today, it is immigrants and Arabs.. then there are always the Jews. tomorrow it will be something else.

They also fear anyone who is different, whose culture and language they don't understand...so they attach all sorts of criminal fantasies to these folks.

IT is sad but true that many of my fellow citizens have the mentality of a box of rocks and the ambition of a sloth.
There is nothing inherently derogatory about the word "alien". It just means someone from a nation other than your own. Only since the age of science fiction movies has it been applied to little green men from outer space.

The spacemen would probably be referred to as extraterestrial immigrants in today's hypersensitive times.
Alien means owing political alegiance to another country. Until the alien takes steps to join the legal process of becoming a legal immigrant they are not an immigrant but an alien visitor.

Their behavior is wrong. The proper name for it is the least of their problems. Immigrants are following the legal steps to become residents.
Because there are more definitions of alien?

Alien has been referred to somone not of a citizen of a country which is how the alien from outerspace is derived. the word alien pertaining to a country was around alot longer than the word alien pertaining to outerspace. as with alot of words.. such as gay use to mean happy.. now it means someone who is attracted to someone of the same sex...but thanks for trying to insult us.. please look up the word next time
Alien means foreign. That's all. Illegal alien means foreigner without permission to be here. All the PC terms are used to make it sound like there is nothing wrong with illegally entering a foreign country as long as you have plenty of excuses to do so. Of course they are human. But what right do these humans have to come take what is ours, without being invited and properly screened? And waiting their turn? We are human too, and deserve respect from those who wish to join us.
Alien means foreign. It is not a slur.
look at the form to begin non-citizen family member to USA it' s call "I-130 petition for Alien Relative"
You may be right. As for ILLEGALS, I think that's pretty precise.
we don't see it as offensive. Although the term alien can also mean a ET, it's not a derrogutory term when used to describe someone who is alien to the nation. Immigrants are people who come here to live. Aliens describe other groups, such as travelers, students, work visas as well as immigrants.

Immigrants are aliens who remain in the US. That's all.
They do it because they genuinely believe that immigrants are lesser people. They have completely forgotten their own history & the fact that every single one of them, with the exception of Native American tribes, is descended from immigrants. They are what made USA what it is today. They should be grateful to these minorities & not insulting.
Someone who is from somewhere else is an alien. They may or may not be intending to emigrate. Alien is a more general name where immigrant is more definitive.
Alien is not an unpleasant word, that's just liberalism B.S. There are 2 types of immigrants, legal & illegal, the "open border" people want to get rid of the distinction. Not all ancestors arrived from Europe, they came from all continents. A lot of us have ancestors from this continent. But I digress, Europe is made from immigrants. people have conquered and re-conquored. People have roamed and people mix. But none the less, we have a present day border, it must be protected. My ancestor didn't mind the borders, now we live on reservations.
'ol wise one: the word 'alien' means "other" and to us, those of another culture are people of an other countries, languages, customs. sooner or later, that alien becomes americanized and he/she too are calling others 'alien'. i know the word might have connotations of being less than pleasant but meaning of the word, the way it's used is in the eye of the beholder/user. also, my fine-feathered friend, not ALL people of the usa have ancestors from europe. there are those, like me that are more native american than those born in the good 'ol usa. to us, you ALL ARE ALIENS! (but we kinda' got over it. i'd suggest the rest do so & real quick). stop being wuss(es).
It is all part of the way that the rich American ruling elite brainwash the lowly and unschooled masses to get maximum compliance with government policies.

By "unschooled", I don't mean people who have not had basic education at school but the utter gross morony of the majority.

Check this out : "We are swamped by Aliens!"
or : "We have a lot of immigrants"

So although the origin of the word may have been correct, it is now generally understood to cover things from outer space. Another example is "Liberal", again an innocent political term that is now used as a term of abuse and degradation by the elite in a way that it no longer relates to its original use.
Because 'alien' meant foreigner long before science fiction developed as a genre and borrowed the name to mean anyone else.

Immigrants who are citizens are no longer 'aliens'.
America use the word "alien" other countries use the word "foreigner" America use the word "vacation" and other countries use the word "holiday" to decride their vacations.
Most of society in America is from legal immigrants. No one ever calls us aliens, but the term illegal aliens refers to those who should not be here. (they are alien to our country)
That is because that is the very DEFINITION of what they are. Don't believe me look it up in the dictionary. They owe allegiance to another nationality. Don't like it? Take it up with Webster. Illegal aliens aren't immigrants. Immigrants are LEGAL citizens...illegal aliens are INVADERS!

ADJECTIVE:

1. Owing political allegiance to another country or government; foreign: alien residents.
2. Belonging to, characteristic of, or constituting another and very different place, society, or person; strange. See Synonyms at foreign.
3. Dissimilar, inconsistent, or opposed, as in nature: emotions alien to her temperament.

NOUN:

1. An unnaturalized foreign resident of a country. Also called noncitizen .
2. A person from another and very different family, people, or place.
3. A person who is not included in a group; an outsider.

EDIT: What is up with all the thumbs down for actual definitions given of the word alien? Can't live with the truth?

Unlawful Entry is a CRIME. America love it or leave it. Unlawful Entry is a CRIME. Leave it Now. Zero tolerance for immigration-law violators! No amnesty, no "stealth-amnesty." No "change of status," marriage fraud, "exceptional leave to remain," no "Temporary Protected Status." If you break the law, depart or be deported. Illegal aliens kill more US citizens each year than the war in Iraq has killed in four years. Apologists for illegal immigration like to paint it as a victimless crime. But in fact, illegal immigration causes substantial harm to American citizens and legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of our population--the poor, minorities, and children. Additionally, job competition by waves of illegal immigrants willing to work at substandard wages and working conditions depresses the wages of American workers, hitting hardest at minority workers and those without high school degrees. Illegal immigration also contributes to the dramatic population growth overwhelming communities across America--crowding school classrooms, consuming already limited affordable housing, and straining precious natural resources like water, energy, and forestland. Taxpayers are being forced to pay for the free health care, education, and other welfare programs being given to illegal aliens; Those tax dollars could be given back to U.S. taxpayers or used to keep our borders secure; They may be here illegally, but they sure know how to "work the system" to collect "free" medical care, "free" education, "free" food, Section 8 housing vouchers and other housing assistance, and hundreds of other social services. It costs citizens additional hundreds of billions of tax dollars at every level: local, state, and federal. It gobbles up billions of our charitable contributions. And much of that money ends up siphoned out of our economy and into offshore accounts. Illegal aliens, over half of whom work "under the table" with neither job nor income reported (nor taxed), are not counted as employed or unemployed. But some of those day-labor and off-the-books "job-lets" would be "real" jobs - available to American citizen job-seekers - if employment regulations were enforced. Illegal aliens can get away with tax evasion, et al., which citizens cannot. In short, we have too many workforce entrants and too few jobs created. The ratio works out to roughly 7-10 workforce entrants per job created. If all illegal aliens depart or are deported, all legal immigration halted, and all temporary employment visas abolished, we still have a problem with more US-born workforce entrants than new jobs created. Illegal immigration damages our country and our citizens every day at every level. And not even the attacks of 2/26 and 9/11 have awakened many Americans to the vast dangers illegal immigration poses to our selves, our families, our communities, our society, our values, our principles, our civilization. Zero Tolerance for Immigration-Law Violators! We must remember the lessons of 2/26, 9/11, and the costs we bear every single day. God Bless the U S A !
