It's an ID issued by united states immigration. It is referred to as a green card because older versions all had a green background but that isn't so with the new ones. It allows an individual to be a legal resident of the United States, free to roam anywhere in the US. It gives an individual all the rights of a citizen except for voting and help from the US embassy in a foreign country. You are allowed to live in the US indefinitely with it as long as you don't commit crimes of violence or moral turpitude. You have to reside in the US at least six months out of a year in order to keep your card. They are good for a period of about 10 years at which point you have to renew. The latest cards, if non-conditional, have a 10-year expiration period. Such actions result in many people losing their LPR status because they spend most of their time outside of the US, using the Green Card more as a non-immigrant visa, or just saving their status for the time that they actually plan to move to the US, some time in the future.

As soon as you get it, it won't have no expiration date on it, and what you do with it, is to have the opportunity to work, and be somebody in the country be allow to have a medical insurance, apply for a credit card, built your credit upon this, and be able to do a lot of things that you couldn't do before, now the green card won't expire like I said, but if you get yourself in trouble, like felonies, or killing somebody, drunk driving, rape, that's serious business and they will deport you and automatically you lose the green card.
