Is this not ironic?

is it not ironic that people all over stress over and over that mexicans are uneducated and only speak spanish

yet, here they are taking away bilingual school programs!

they are truly doing the opposite of killing two birds with one stone.

the bilingual programs allowed hispanic kids to learn in school and to learn english as well. problems solved!

instead, the same people who claim mexicans are uneducated and only speak spanish are preventing the solution to this supposed problem which is this: bilingual programs

here we have an opportunity to teach a mass of children, not only the basic school teachings, but english as well, and the ignorant people blow the opportunity and create problems which they blame mexicans for.

agree? or disagree?

Answer:
There is a lot of debate among teachers about bilingual education. Personally, I'm for it. I think it helps students to integrate on many levels. I think that bilingual ed is especially important for older students because they don't pick up the language as easily as the very young. I've had a lot of people disagree with me on this one, but I'm with you. I think bilingual ed is helpful.
Welcome to America, now go home!
Bilingual school programs have proven not to be particularly effective either for English or Spanish speaking students. The United States is primarily an English speaking nation, and it would be sensible to keep it like that. Those Hispanics who are here legally seem to have managed by and large to learn English all by themselves, or by attending normal school ... any reason why this can't continue? Or are you implying that the Hispanics who immigrated here over the last decades still don't understand English??
disagree....and who blames mexicans??? no one!
i agree with you. And for the girl who said that they should learn by attending normal school is an idiot because in my homeroom there are two girls who speak no english and its very difficult for them to learn. How can you learn something on a senior of high school level when you can only speak as much english as a two year old? I think the bilingual program was a great thing for them.
I have never supported bilingual education because it is not fair to children from other countries to offer only Spanish. I believe that children would be better served to learn English by immersion anyway. We could ask the community to come forward to volunteer time to tutor children in their home language until they can grasp English. Bilingual education holds children back in my opinion.

A very good friend of mine teaches bilingual classes. She no longer thinks it is a good idea either. Next school year she will not do bilingual ed.
Well, they came over here to America. Didn't they expect that they'd need to learn English to really go anywhere in this country? I mean, if you move to France, Italy, China, or Japan, it'd be wise to know either French, Italian, Chinese, or Japanese if you want to survive.
Why aren't these kids learning English instead of us having to learn Spanish. They came here *illegally* and, if they're going to stay, something has to give, and I personally think that we shouldn't have to. How I see it, English should be taught in school from Day 1 and, in the case of illegals, should be encouraged at home. The parents should learn English so that they (the parents) can both be able to fit into America better and for the sake of their children.
Basically, what Sashie and Vegaswoman said.
but why as a tax payer am i responsible for it. if they learn to speak English on there dime i wouldn't be upset. but like you say this happens at school, and I'm sure you mean public school, so my tax dollars are paying for it. if the parents know how to speak English the kids would learn from them. but in this day and age we think that schools should tech children everything and that parents don't have to teach them noting, they learn it at school
Explain why in Texas they want to teach kids in KG in Spanish? Your bilingual concept is not cheap and it discriminates against all the other languages. You are saying all illegals are in fact Mexicans not us
they are doing it because the bettering of Americans and its residents is not what they care about, its all about fear of America changing, and becoming a place for all and not just some few elites. Its all about arrogance and, I for one, am tired of it.
If I was going to move to France I would learn French BEFORE I WENT THERE...

I would NOT expect special programs for them to teach me.

It is MY responsiblity to learn the native language...not theirs to teach me.

Those programs are being eliminated because of the cost to the TAXPAYERS. TAXPAYERS are pissed and are tired of paying for others poor planning!
Yes, bilingual programs can be beneficial. However, they are meant to accelerate a child's understanding of English. The problem with people wanting non-English speaking students to be educated in their native language as opposed to English, is that it just cost too much. Remember, we do not just have children entering the school system as native Spanish speakers....you have many different languages. That is one of the problems schools in California were facing. They had ended up with 50 plus different languages to accommodate. It is far more effective to use the bilingual program to teach ESL students English, so they can get on with their studies.
if we kicked out all the illegals there would be little need for the spanish english esl BS,,,they have the same for chinese in some areas,,,,they are all children of illegals,, its not ironic,,it's just saying enough is enough,,,some schools have cancelled AP programs and music programs to teach english and special ED just so these kids would drop out early anyway,,,and about half of them do Sergio
We shouldn't have bilingual school programs! Why should they be special? If they are in the U.S. they should need to speak English to attend our schools. When other nationalities migrated here "legally", our schools did not have bilingual classes for the Germans & Italians, if they didn't know they language they were held back until they did, they weren't treated special. Why do you think this country owes anyone anything? Exspecially someone who "illegally" entered our country.
The irony is NOT lost on me.
All these people whine and ***** about uneducated people THEN whine and ***** some more WHEN they want to get educated and THEN whine and ***** some more when THOSE children are bilingual (something most of their children aren't). OH and then blame the downfall of education ON THEM.
BUT you wanted THEM to talk ENGLISH. You wanted them UNEDUCATED so they wouldn't take the jobs from your UNWILLING TO LEARN AMERICANS who can't talk ONE language WELL...you screwed that up. I get the irony.
mexicans would rather just have everything in spanish, they dont want to learn english. Can't you see with those bilingual programs there forcing their way of life on us and trying to change america. And why should tax payers spend their money on bilingual programs for fuckin illegal immigrants!
I agree I think it is great that there is more bilingual people because it indulges our life's with more opportunities, the more languages you speak the better prepared you will be for the real world.
By the time you reach the age to go to school you should already be able to interact with others speaking english.
It is not fair to have bilingual classes for only Spanish speaking peoples. If you follow this line of thinking, why shouldn't there be bilingual classes for all immigrants ( I assume you are addressing legal immigrants)?? If you are talking about bilingual school programs for illegal aliens it is even more unreasonable. Because it's impossible!!!! We have millions of immigrants from many different countries that speak many different languages. The public schools have enough problems already without being required to teach people English that should already know it.
The problem comes from taxpayers having to pay all the extra expense for people who are illegally in the country to learn the language. Special classes should be set aside for those to learn English at their own, or their parents expense.
