Why do we need a passport as US citizens in order to travel and return here?

We now have to have passports if we are visiting Canada or Mexico in order to return to the US. WHY DON'T THE ILLEGALS HAVE TO HAVE ANYTHING AND WALK RIGHT IN?

Answer:
To enter another country, they require your passport to establish your presence there legally.
To return, it establishes that you are indeed allowed to legally re-enter.
I'm glad it's now required for Canada and Mexico. Those who can feign American accents and flash easily made fake ID's will find it harder to obtain passports the way they are now designed and find it harder to enter via air or other forms of public transport.
As for the illegals sneaking in, well...they are illegal and sneaky.
Do you expect them to have a passport?
Thank the ACLU for that one. Besides Osama is going to get us, so we got to be safe
because it is for our own protection as well as the countries we visit protection, it isnt just to come in and out of the us but it is to enter and leave other countries as well... as for the illegal mexicans, they dont have to have anything because they do it illegally
Because we're all terrorists.
Well those "illegals" cant open a bank account, get a drivers licence, work, get caught, or anything else. Its amazing how when you have something "a drivers licence" you dont think about how much you use it. Now if you loose it you may find yourself not able to rent a car, dvd, check into a hotel, goto a club, etc. Its the same with the passport.
well you could try running across the dessert in the middle of the night, swimming rivers and climbing fences. maybe you could hire a coyote to bring you in and hope he doesn't abandon you while locked in an airless sweltering truck in the arizona sun. then again it might be just as easy to get that passport.
The rest of the world has always had to have passports to travel in and out of their country. We have been lucky to have lasted this long without having to have them. If you want to truly at least try to keep out the terrorists and the illegals, it's part of the price.
Because their is a difference between immigrants and registered citizens. In order to travel in and out of the country you need a passport to prove you are a legal citizen, otherwise any body who had the mobility could just come over and say they're home, which would only cause social security, job stability and other issues. It would also be impossible to be sure how many people are living in America.

In the case of the illegal immigrants, well that is why they're called "illegal immigrants''. If they could come over legally, I'm sure they'd rather to that. And you're rationally making conclusions out of ignorance. Illegal immigrants cannot come and go as they please. If they could there wouldn't be such chaos in Washington and all the protest if there wasn't something keeping them from coming and going as they pleased.
Have our public schools degraded to the point that Americans are no longer able to differentiate between antonyms? Legal entry. Illegal entry. Being waved through a checkpoint with a smile. Secretly crossing hundreds of miles of desert terrain. One needs a passport. The other does not. Tell me, can you guess which one? Aren't you happy with that passport now or would you like to forego that inconvenience and take the scenic route into the US?
illegals are called illegals for a reason, they don't have passports and go through hell to get across the border, so unless you want to do that, get a passport..
the authorities should do something about this, yes?
