If I marry my American girlfriend, but have a conviction in the U.S., would I ever be able to visit?
My mom's American and I lived with her in Maine when I was 12 til the time I was 25 on a Green Card, sponsored by my stepdad. When I was young and dumb, I was really messed up on drugs and I got caught and convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance (yeah, that probably doesn't bode well). I was taken from jail, went thru the process of getting my card revoked pending an immigration trial, but I instead exercised my right to voluntary deportation as it was probably a lost cause. I'm not the same twit I was, I'm a clean(as in sober 6 years now), law biding and productive Canadian citizen now. But I love her and I can't make her move here. So, can marriage get us perhaps even living together? Kinda? Maybe-ish in a way?
Answer:
I would go right to the source. Call the American consulate in your area and ask them. They've all been young and dumb. Perhaps if you can show that you haven't been in trouble in Canada they'll let you in.

Yes it takes five years after deportation and if you get a waver, otherwise it is a 10 year bar.
Before popping the big question to her talk to an immigration lawyer that might help.
