What are the general steps for applying for a student visa?

If you are asking about a US F-1 student visa,

apply to and be accepted by a college

Receive an I-20 form from the school

Pay the SEVIS fee

Make an appointment for your visa interview; pay the application fee; complete the forms (you will find all this on the web page for the consulate where you will apply)

Attend the interview; convince the consular officer that you intend to study hard and then to retun home when you're finished

Go to the US and go to class. Write your mother often.
