Where high crime levels and mass immigration connected in the 1970s?
This was a massive change from the 1950s and 1960s, The period in which us citizens found middle class prosperity and rising wages with little immigration. (Most films then where comedies or suspense films like The odd couple, Breakfast at Tiffany's, HItchcock's rear window, or north by northwest etc..)
What caused this massive change?
Was it the 1965 immigration act?
(*The 1965 Hart-Cellar immigration Act - a bill sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy which created compounding mass immigration)http://www.frontpagemag.com/articles/rea...
Take one city - New York - Did mass immigration undercut and displaced low skilled us citizens in arigiculture, who then moved to US cities like NY to find themselves unemployed due to mass immigrantion? After 1965, by the 1970s and 1980s the city was a hellhole.
Answer:
So you get most of your history from Hollywood movies? hehe
The largest increase in immigration has been over the last 10 years, most of it illegal and from Mexico. There are plenty of demographics showing increases in crime connected with this influx. Of course you have to do research rather than just watch movies.
Why do you think we want to secure our borders?
Mass immigration didn't happen until the 1990s. From about 1960 through the early 80s, there were fewer than 100,000 immigrants annually.
In the 90s immigration exploded to a peak of a million per year and has continued thus.
Not really - you are stretching your point a bit there. I think that the nationwide economic recession, inflation and high oil prices had more of an effect than immigration in that time period. Most people were leaving cities at that time, not going towards them. There was also a controversial money and morale draining foreign war going on that divided society and caused unrest.
The 50's were also a product of a post war boom and really should not be used as the median when measuring economic periods. The "ideal" 1950s are more of an aberration than a norm. I notice that you left off "Psycho" (1960). The Kitty Genovese murder also happened in the 1960's. The murders that were the basis for "In Cold Blood" took place in the 50's. "West Side Story" came out in the 60's. "Guys and Dolls" came out in the 50's. All of these films are about crime/murder.
There are alternate theories out there that the large number of abused and unwanted children brought up in broken homes (as they were born prior to roe vs wade abortion rights ruling) had a great effect on crime rates back then, and post Roe, is reflected in the relatively low crime rates now. Basically removing future underpriveledged/criminals
Besides, most American films didn't really reflect American lives accurately as there were standards and codes that were being upheld which tended to disregard realism. How many older movie show couples sleeping in twin beds? Things were changed to fit what audiences wanted to see. For example, in the book "Breakfast at Tiffany's" the female lead is a high class hooker. And "Rear Window" is about a murder, (committed by a non-immigrant) so I am not getting your point there at all.
Recent studies have stated that immigrant neighborhoods tend to have lower crime rates than non-immigrant neighborhoods.
