What would an American need to do in order to move to the United Kingdom?

My son is very interested in moving to England, but we do not know what is required for him to do so. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Well, it really depends on his situation. If he's been to university and has some work experience he may qualify under the points scheme. Similarly, there are a few professions that the UK has a shortage in, and it's easier to come if you're seeking to do that kind of work. If he hasn't been to university yet, he could always apply to one in England. He'd be allowed to work part time and it'd be easier for him to get work after he graduated. Otherwise, it's rather difficult.

Also, might I suggest he go for an extended visit if he hasn't done so already. Many Americans don't realize how different British culture is from their own and can end up quite unhappy when the culture shock sets in. The UK has it's own set of pros and cons like any other country, and it's best for your son to know what he's getting into before packing up and moving. Check out these websites for info:

Generally, he would need either to marry a British woman [or have a "civil partnership" with a UK man], or to be in a job where there's a shortage in this country, usually teachers, doctors, social workers, etc.
Just turn up! We seem to welcome anyone these days.Particularly if you are looking for a free ticket.Plead poverty.Say you are an assylum seeker and our government will give you a house and an income.Happy days.
He will need a work visa and permit, a Fixed Abode (House), A permanent job, and an income, apart from that so long as he brings lots of warm clothes and money and himself he should be fine.
Learn English ,get a personality ,lose weight,dress better and mostly don`t tell ANYONE he`s American LOL
Tell him to go to New Zealand instead. Our country's crap!
I don't want to be unkind but we have enough Americans over here and from what we have gathered over the years you are all more trouble than you are worth. Having said that and got it off my chest, I hope you are one of the nice ones - like that one we have here - Madonna!
the list;

1( speak english )
A personality transplant - and he'd need to learn the language
declare himself a muslim,blacken his skin,carry a sign saying 'speak no english'.this will put him on the 'fast track to a visa. sorry cant be of more help,but he is most welcome if he can put up with the rain,traffic jams,the anti-americanism shown by some idiots ,high cost of living,etc,etc. good luck !!
He should apply to go to university here. It'll be much cheaper than going to a US college and he can then get a job here when he graduates. Plus, the univeristy workload here is a lot less than the US colleges. And there are degrees available for anyone these days, regardless of intellectual ability!
i agree totally with Jacsea
