Applying for dual US/UK citizenship–my dad is scottish?

how do i go about applying for dual citizenship if my dad is scottish? i have a US passport now, and would like to also have one from the UK to make travel in europe easier...any ideas on what forms i need etc

Answer:
You're just like me! Yay! Get the passport. Don't bother going for citizenship (unless you want to seriously live there).. it costs about $900 US whereas the passport will cost you about $250 US. Trust me.. much better to spend that money travelling.

It's a little hard to be too specific about especially since I don't know your age or date of birth (rules change depending on when you were born and if you're a under 16 the paperwork will have to be completed by your parents). But the info provided is mainly what is generally needed.

Originals:
Your birth certificate.
Dad's birth certificate.
Dad's naturalization or citizenship certificate.
Father's current or expired passport.
Marriage certificate (if your parents weren't married at the time of your birth this may be a problem and you would have to check your date of birth in compliance with the laws (if you were born before 1984 out of wedlock I'm not sure if you qualify for a passport.

Copies:
If you're over 16. A copy of a current photo ID (driver's licence, uni card) that is issued by the government (I don't think the work ID would do). If you don't have this then you will need two pieces of ID with your address on them.

Of course you'll need the passport forms (C1 or C2 depending on your age which you can get from the website referenced below), two identical pictures taken of you that are not older than 6 months (one of them needs to be endorsed by someone who has known you for at least 2 years and has government standing in either the UK or the country of your application if under 16 then they'd need to know your parents).

Oh yeah.. I forgot to mention I travelled around Europe and no one gave me any trouble on one passport but the Parisians don't like the Americans. I found quite a few Americans tended to say that they were Canadian to Europeans.
