Did the immigration bill fold last week because the grass roots roared?
"Rosemary Jenks, a policy advocate at NumbersUSA, which calls for curbing immigration, said that 7,000 new members signed up for the organization in a single day last week. Other groups reported a similar outpouring as proponents of the Senate bill claimed to be gaining momentum.
“We had way more response than we could handle,” said Stephen Elliott, president of Grassfire.org, a conservative Internet group that called for volunteers for a petition drive and instructed people how to barrage lawmakers with telephone calls and e-mail.
The group gathered more than 700,000 signatures on petitions opposing the bill, delivering them this week to senators in Washington and in their home states.

EDITED: vladblutsorgur (i think it's spelled right) above is so, so, so correct! bills all have other little bills attached to them, and we do not know what they say. we have no idea what legislation that can negatively affect us all is passed right under our noses as amendments or additional documentation or as outright additional laws right inside of, or attached to, "one" bill! it is high time that we ourselves demand to read every word of every proposed bill and pick apart any ambiguities contained in it, long before it goes to our so-called "representatives! BELOW IS MY ORIGINAL ANSWER:
the citizens of the united states born to citizens of the united states SHOULD get petitions signed to bar the illegal alien [amnesty] strive act! they should also call and call and call their senators night and day, leaving voice messages when necessary, as well as emailing them relentlessly and sending telegrams and signed letters that would reach from floor to ceiling of their cozy offices (that we pay for), in protest of the way this 1,000 page bill was hidden from us for about one year in the cushy office of ted kennedy, then suddenly alluded to in the news with only the scantiest information so that we would not be able to analyze the bill itself!
considering that our legislators are now talking about passing a bill to force them to READ the bills that they vote on, on OUR behalf, since their JOB is to represent US (no taxation without representation, remember?), why can't they read all the messages that we barrage them with so that they do not sneak the passing of this bill past us?
GOOD FOR GRASSFIRE.ORG, which released the link shown below. (make sure that you scroll down to see the same 6 video boxes on this page. first click your mouse on the first one, wait 3 seconds, then click on the second, and so on, until you understand the voracious chatter that is against the passage of this bill). HERE IT IS:

go, america, go!
Nope.
Yes, I,m going to start a Minuteman Chapter, just because of it.
Absolutely and we need to keep roaring!
I believe it did and I believe the outraged citizens are going to roar louder, now a lot of radio personalities are carrying the torch and carrying the will of the people to the congressmen and senators.
For instance,in this city, check out;ankarlo.net he has an interesting website.
"We the People", that's why it worked. Those in office heard us loud at clear! Now if we can continue to keep shouting at them to do things right, get things done, work for the American people who voted you in and not the illegals who are trying to take over.
**Cy where you are at there might already be a MM group to join up with.
I did my own letter writing. I wrote to Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC,) Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC,) and Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC.) I must say the immediate response I received from both DeMint and Wilson was in line with my views. Senator Graham however kept his stance backing both the President and Senator Kennedy. If anything, it just means I'll vote for someone else the next time he runs. I am an independent and vote both ways. I have to admit I voted for the above mentioned SC representation in the Congress, I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad. I also like Senator DeMints stance on the environment. While it may not be as far left as mine, it's the best one out of this state in awhile. So to sum this up, grass root campaigns and the letter writing of the vast majority of the voting public together is what defeated this immigration reform bill.
Sure, but not enough people know what's going on in the world so it will eventually push through.
In spite of what politicians for the immigration bill say,the people in this country made their voices heard,Ted Kennedy and company are spinning it that scare tactics were used by talk shows like Lou Dobbs, but you don't have to be a scientist to realize this bill was a disgrace made in secret by our elected officials that are suppose to look after our welfare and instead are just high priced used car dealers
It folded because the specifics of the bill, including the abandonment of the ability to sponsor family members to the US and the denial of business to sponsor workers to the US that they needed removed immigration policy from the world of society and business needs and placed it solely in the world of government policy. It was a bill that satisfied neither liberals who want a more open immigration nor the rightist anti-americans who want to blow up the statue of liberty and eliminate its pro-immigration motto and have all immigration stopped. With business opposing it, the facisti opposing it, and liberals opposing it for vastly different reasons it was bound to fail. It was, sad to say, just another part of Bushes big government policy that tried to give something to everyone but ended up giving nothing to anyone except washington politicians. If the law had legitimately addressed the concerns of any two of those three groups it woud have passed. I'm guessing that the abandonment of family sponsorship and the abandonment of business sponsorship were the most damning features. Moneyed business is listened to in congress and anyone who voted for this bill would have lost the support of most recent immigrants and their children and probably the support of most hispanics. Those advocating moving the Berlin wall to the Mexican border are sufficiently small in number that their influence is limited to congressmen and senators in regions where they are concentrated.
That and hopefully some sparked up dead brain cells. I don't think I've ever read a more useless bill in my life. I mean it was pure junk. Seems to me if they want some honest reform the first rule is keep Teddy Kennedy out of the room, no LaRaza either. I mean it scares me that people that inept are running our government. The American people aren't that darn stupid.
I would like to think so but the fact remains. The Status Quo works for the illegals and their supporters.
Look at California. The State with the worst problem and it's Senator Queen Dianne Feinstein.
"California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat who helped negotiate the failed deal, said, the current immigrant situation in the United States is a de facto amnesty. "
She is right. The bill would have granted amnesty but, because Queen Dianne absolutely refuses to uphold the law, we have a de facto amnesty. Queen Dianne wins either way.
We never would have got the enforcement, just like we didn't get the fence. Like the new Grassfire slogan says. "Where's the fence?"
If our Senators are beginning to listen then they will start passing enforcement legislation. They will authorize the extra Border Patrol and they will start living up to their promises.
The grassroots effort needs to start focusing on driving the legislation that we want. rather than expending all of its energies defeating the legislation we do not want.
We need to start making examples of those traitor Senators like Dianne Feinstein. We need to start recall proceedings against them. Boxer voted against cloture so she gets to stay. Feinstein voted for cloture so she has got to go.
The fact remains that thousands are still crossing every day and our Congress has done nothing. We need to act and act fast. Bring back the enforcement only bill that the House passed over a year ago.
Now the President is pressuring Congress to push the bill through, so it's time for round 2 of slamming Congress and POTUS with emails against this mess of a bill.
To answer your question: Yes.
I called into my Senators offices repeatedly, and got the same staffer 5 times. She was laughing and said they were going to add my name to their generic answering machine message.
LOL
Finally!
Yes. It does seem dismal at times, but if the citizens of America band together like this, we CAN make a difference - this happening proved it.
But let's not rest on our laurels. If we feel like we've won already, and stop the practice of contacting our officials, our numbers will be weaker next time, and we may not be able to defeat the next bill.
Remember that the Government is sneaky - it may attempt to sneak in wording from the now-dead Immigration bill into future Immigration/Terrorism bills. Read up on your legislation proposals - then report to the Internet community wherever you can your findings - start another grassroots movement. This is the way we will be doing politics in the future.
WE HELPED LOTS! According to Congressman Ed Royce, from Fullerton, CA, talk radio did a great job informing people. The fact that voters were livid and called their congresspeople make a huge difference to make this pile of crap go down in flames!
I can't believe that Bush, Reid, McCain, etc... are still trying. Only 11% of voters approve of this bill. Even the pro-illegals don't like it, because they say it's too harsh.
We can't stop the pressure! We MUST continue calling & writing to the weasels in Washington. We need enforcment of our current laws, not a "steaming pile of horse crap" - John from the "John and Ken Show (KFI640 radio in LA California)
