Well the economy of Mexico had actually been booming in the decades before 1910, just not for the average worker. In 1910, your average Mexican farming peon was making 26 cents a day as compared to 35 cents a day in 1899. 1% of the population held 85% of the wealth in 1910. It was actually leaders of the ruling class that challenged the dictator Diaz in 1910 after yet another stolen and false 'election'. What was actually called the Mexican Revolution was actually a series of coups and attempted overthrows by various groups that left about one million Mexicans dead and not that much changed in 1920.
So in the end going backwards economically led the mass of people willing to follow disgruntled ruling class members into a revolution.
