Do you consider yourself an immigrant, or descended from immigrants?
Who are your ancestors? Are you decended from immigrants?
Answer:
Well, I'd have to say that regardless of my lineage; I'm almost entirely certain that the bulk of my ancestors were immigrants (invaders too), or themselves descended from them. The chance of me having 'pure' Britton blood is so small as to be unthinkably improbable. Even prior to the Roman occupation of the island there was significant enough trade and travel between Britain and the continent for immigration to be more than a possibility. The fact that one of our widest known 'Brittons' had a Celtic name - Boudicca - should be enough to dispel doubt that we live in a country with a rich and varied ancestry.
All that said; it's worth noting that humanity as a whole has spread across the world and that probably no particular population can say that it is truly living in it's original place of origin. Just because we've developed different physical traits over the millennia doesn't mean our most distant ancestors came from the place we now occupy.
Oh, Frank - The norse occupied the north of England for some time. It was known as Danelaw and the rapen and pillage you describe was not exclusive to their culture. Bear in mind that the Saxons (who had invaded scant centuries before) who occupied the south of England were similarly disposed (as were pretty much every invading force in history). I might also point out that such practices carry the obvious implication that it mingles the gene-pool. Can you really say with surety that you share blood with neither Saxon, nor Northman? For that matter, what about Roman, Gaul etc...

Everyone comes from africa hence the name cradle of life which makes everyone immigrants in that sense
If you get right down to it we all were. But yes my family came over via Ellis island. The legal route.
I was pushed off that wall...
Difficult to answer, because of the word immigrant. Is there a difference between arriving in the Uk as an invader as in the case of your ancestors, or arriving as a legal voluntary immigrant, or arriving here under duress because you were snatched from a village in Africa and forced to come here as a slave?
I am descended from immigrants. I was born in the Americas and so were my ancestors going back to the 18th century, so I am an American, just like the Mexicans are Americans and the Guatemalans are Americans etc. And any immigrant who comes to these continents and chooses to identify themselves as such is an American too.
MY PARENTS CAME TO THE U.S. HERE ILLEGALY, & THEY COME FROM A MIXTURE OF MAYAN INDIANS & SPANIARDS. I DONT CONSIDER MYSELF IMMIGRANT & IM VERY PROUD OF MY MEXICAN HERITAGE!
I am an immigrant, my ancestors were the MAYANS, and they were indigenous to those parts. I live in CA now, but MAYANS are just a bit south.
I'm descended from a Tyrannosaurus Rex!
What a stoooopid question.
On my mothers side my ancestors came over during the potato famine. On my dad's side they came from Germany before the war to find work to send money back...they thought the streets were paved in gold.
You are not an immigrant. You are a the descendant of rapists and pillagers.
Don't forget in those days your descendants had to come here and steal what was needed.
Immigrants come here to have access to our social benefits without having to make a contribution. I suppose that amounts to the same thing.
I am an American, born in Mexico of Mexican parents of Spanish descent. My ancestors came to Mexico when the situation in Spain was not favourable. ... I'm in the U.S. now, but I'm not more of an immigrant than a U.S. Born citizen.
im a viking too..as well as being german, irish,scotish,aboriginal.an... australian born..
im back to my roots now...London
Yes...I am the offspring of immigrants. Irish, English, German, French.and we did get along with the natives since I'm part Sioux Indian.
I hear I'm like 95% Germen.my mom told me my tiny finger was French...but the men I've known said it was my tongue. My temper is definately German and Irish. I could drink any man under the table...very opinionated and a very high IQ. Blonde, green eyes.lime green if I cry...I don't burn even though I am almost glow in the dark white.when I tan ...it's a really pretty golden tan. I never burn. I am 5'2" and NOT fat. So...do I fit any racial profile?.no.
we are all immigrants due to war famine etc
a citizen.
My ancestors are from Norway too, but i class myself as British, my grandfather fought in WW1 and my dad fought in WW II so i think this makes me British, as for my ancestors well after a 1000 yrs here and accepting the British way of live, what else could i be ?
No. I am a Brythonic Celt by race, Welsh. My ancestors started arriving in Britain about 10,000 years ago at which time Britain was still joined by land to Europe.
In the Welsh language, there is no word for England. It is simply described as "lost land".
The Celtic folk of Britain and Eire are NOT immigrants, they have been established in these islands for 10,000 at the very least. This rule applies to the Cornish, Welsh, Irish and Scots. All other race groups in UK are of immigrant descent, Viking or otherwise and are therefore classified as 'foreign' and not of Britain.
The people who built Stone Henge and designed the Uffington Celtic white horse on the downs are still here. The people of Uffington are British, even though it is in England. They still tend and worship their magnificent Celtic Horse God.
Iam a true welshman , married to a sheep,, theres an hole in my welly,,bugger it
Im Tripping' Man!!!
i consider my ancestors were khymry -ancient briton our family name goes way back into the mists of time there is more than a chance that there is also anglo saxon/ vikings/ irish /pictish mixed in there somewhere along the line who really knows where your ancestors came from our family has lived in the same town for over 400 years the oldest family member came in 1600
I myself have mainly west Scottish ancestry, but there are aspects of Irish and Cornish on my mother's side, and my Grandmother on my father's side was a Londoner.
I think boy102789 made a very good point. The human race originated in east and central Africa, so in that sense almost the whole human race could consider themselves immigrants
As far as the UK is concerned though, if you count those who were first to colonise the British Isles as the indigenous "founders", then all who came afterwards were either invaders or immigrants.
Recent studies suggest that these "founders" came to the British Isles from the Iberian peninsula and did not speak a Celtic language, but a non-celtic Indo-European language. Later they pretty much adopted the language and culture of the Brythonic Celts, who were apparently very good at spreading their culture, but not so good at spreading their genes. They were obviously culturally advanced, but not very sexy :-))
Population studies of mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosomal DNA indicate that the modern day people of Wales, Ireland, west and central Scotland and Cornwall are mainly descended from these Iberian "founders" (>90% of gene types).
The vast majority of British people, however, have some DNA from these "founders" (at least 58% of gene types) indicating that the majority are of mixed descent, mainly from the founding Iberians, but with contributions from later waves of immigrants or invaders such as the Brythonic Celts, Picts, Romans, Scots, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans e.t.c, e.t.c, e.t.c.
In his book "Origins of the British" (2006), Stephen Oppenheimer states (pages 375 and 378):
"By far the majority of male gene types in Britain and Ireland derive from Iberia (modern Portugal and Spain), ranging from a low of 59% in Fakenham, Norfolk to highs of 96% in Llangefni, north Wales and 93% Castlerea, Ireland. On average only 30% of gene types in England derive from north-west Europe. Even without dating the earlier waves of north-west European immigration, this invalidates the Anglo-Saxon wipeout theory... ...75-95% of Britain and Ireland (genetic) matches derive from Iberia...Ireland, coastal Wales, and central and west-coast Scotland are almost entirely made up from Iberian founders, while the rest of the non-English parts of Britain and Ireland have similarly high rates. England has rather lower rates of Iberian types with marked heterogeneity, but no English sample has less than 58% of Iberian samples..."
So it seems the people of England are actually the least "British" of the peoples of the British Isles.
most of the biggotts will tell u they are celts or some such rubbish when in fact they have jewish, black, indian and all manner of different nationals blood coyrsing round their bodies, not that they would have addmitt it.I know my roots are welsh from my name and what i have been told by relatives, coming from spain about 700ad.So i guess that makes you and me imigrants, just remember all the trouble you pesky vikings caused us,i imagine that is why the crime rate is so high
