Question about green card?

i just got here in LA, 29th of october 2006, a few weeks later i received my green card.

i want to know if i still need to stay here for a certain amount of time like for a year or so?, before i could go back to the philippines again? i've been here for almost 7 months.

i need to stay there in the philippines for about 10 months, would that be okay? i mean like wouldn't it ruin my opportunity to come back here again? i've read something on the book that was provided to us that we can stay outside the country but not more than a year, so i guess it's okay?

is it like once you received your green card you can leave whenever you want to?

im really confused right now.
your answers will be appreciated and please no mean remarks. :) thanks ..

All the "six month" answers are wrong. Where do people get this stuff?

You can stay out for up to (but not a day over) one year. On returning to the US, be prepared to convince the CBP officer that you never intended to give up your US residency, but had a reason to be away for so long, whatever it was; tell the truth. Here is the official policy: look about halfway down the page where it talks about maintaining permanent residency:

You cannot stay for more than six months outside of USA if you are a Green Card holder. Contact Immigration to see if they can waive that, here is their general phone # (800) 375-5283.
To sustain permanent residency status, you must be within the US border for a minimum of 2.5 years out of 5. No single trip outside the border can exceed 6 months, and no more than 6 months outside the country in any 12 month period.

Basically, if you are gone more than 6 months, you lose your 'residency' portion. This is due to taxation laws, among other items. (If you are in the US for 183 days in a calendar year, you are considered to fall under US tax law and can be taxed on your worldwide income at the US rate ... even if you are paying taxes elsewhere while you are out of the country. If the country is not one that has a tax treaty with the US, you may well be out of luck ... and be taxed for the same income in both places.)
I would not advise you to go for so long since you are new in the country. But if you go for more than 6 months apply for a re-entry permit its valid for a year and a half. Remember when you go to the Phillipiines for 10 months you break your residency so you wont able to apply for US citizenship until you come back and then five years later you can apply for citizenship.
You cannot stay more than 6 months outside of the U.S. if you are a green card holder. You need to file a form I-191 to be able to come back, but it would be better to do it with an attorney. Best of luck!
