because the ones that speak espanol breed like cockroaches..and even though they arent in positions of power, there are so many of them that in some businesses, its necessary
i have a friend who's a social worker in los angeles.though she's been a soc worker for 10 years..she said that theres no way in hell she would be able to get her job today w/o hablaing espanol...even though she has a PhD

You probably saw a sign that says hiring bilinguals.
that doesn't mean they ONLY hire bilinguals they just need one to translate.

uhhh they don't have to. there are many jobs that don't require English. There are many jobs that don't require speaking at all.
As for those in customer service departments they "should" be required to know the language of their target market.
Hopefully Capitalism will encourage companies to hire bi-lingual reps if their target market is both an English and other language community.

there are a lot of people coming in to this country, illegal or not and it is good to be bilingual.. most companies deal with other companies from different countries.. and there more likely to send some one who speaks a different language to cut a deal. plus the money is better if your bilingual.. also. what of you go to another country you don't want to be taken advantage of do you?
i also agree if you are going to be a citizen of The United States you need to learn English.. but if your not bilingual who is going to teach them?

Ya, my boss said he would retrench me if I didn't learn. I was taking too long to start learning. Luckily in the end I came across this program "Learn Spanish like Crazy" and now I've broken the resistance and I'm learning every day. I'm not so mad with the threat anymore.
