Why are people so bent out of shape when they hear spanish?
Answer:
Because there is a huge disconnect among people and a huge anti immigrant sentiment in this country right now.
I agree with you... people should just get use to the spanish...
Good question.I know at work people suspect that we are talking about them. The fact is,that my best friend's English is so raggedy, that I much rather speak to him in Spanish because I can't understand his English at all.On the other hand, when some of my co-workers start speaking Italian,no one gets bent out of shape at all.go figure.
yea... really...i think its cool learning a new language
what is this spanish of which you speak?
Personally I don't like the language, never did. But I live up north and there's no reason for people here, who are living and working in this country to not speak English. They aren't tourists and the Mexican border is too far away from here for it to be crossed back and forth on a daily basis for shopping or anything else. I just don't think as a citizen of this country, living in a state where English is the official language, that I should need an interpreter to order a burger.
I don't get bent out of shape when I hear spanish but I do get bent out of shape when I hear someone speaking english at a restaurant but then try to get out of paying by pretending that they only speak spanish.
I also have a problem when I hear "You don't speak spanish? Well you better learn."
I also get bent out of shape when a mexican is bilingual and is called a traitor for teaching english to other mexicans.
Is that you that just called me??
Seriously, I just got a voicemail from some dude speaking spanish - like just 1 minute ago...
I don't have to get use to anything, this is America, speak english, I can understand if I were in a nother country but I'm not
Spanish itself is a wonderful language. Unfortunately it sounds like gobbledygook coming out of Mexican mouths.
I think people should learn to speak any language they want it broadens the mind and makes you a more well rounded person, I personally speak French and some broken Spanish, along with English of course - but I do not think that there should be a demand for a citizen to speak Spanish (or any other language). Those who border Mexico probably do already speak at least broken Spanish but why should the folks in Virginia or Iowa be required to speak Spanish?
My problem with Spanish is that in America English is the language predominantly spoken.
Why should my tax dollars go to put up signs in English and Spanish. When my ancestors came to the US they assimilated, as should everyone else.
Spanish is no more special than any other language; so to say that people get "bent out of shpae" when they hear Spanish is a little misguided.
For instance, many females go to get their nails done and most of these shops are Asian-owned. All of the workers there conversate in their native tongue and many people, including Hispanics ironiccally, get offended by it. Automatically, people tend to think that people are talking about them because if they weren't and they know English, why then convert to your native tongue?
It's funny that this question was asked because yesterday while at a party, I spoke with a guy who looks White, but is Mexican and he says that he has caught people talking about him in Spanish several times!
Also, a friend of mine told me that once she went to get her nails done and the ladies there were talking in their native tongue. She and someone else that was there thought that they were talking about them.
So, it's not exclusive to hear Hispanics speak in their native tongue and get scolded for doing so, it occurs with others too.
one second lets talk about reality
the spanish language is associate to illegal immigrants
I know is wrong but you like or not is the reality right now
then there is another problem
how do you like to work with people speak only spanish
all the time in your own workplace in your own country ?
that is called reverse discrimination so what Americans do?
at least here in Arizona they vote a new law
the English is the official language in Arizona state
but nothing is change anyway you can go in any fast food
and everybody speak spanish even when you apply for a job
they require the spanish language in order to get the job
and then you surprised when people are freaking out?
well in order to understand a problem you need to look
both side of the coin not just one
Because you are in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and we speak english here!!
Spanish is fine, but english should be known also. On the borders sure it will be common, but it's everywhere. Some try and avoid responsibility by not letting you know they know english. I've had contractors send over spanish speaking workers you ask them to do somehting they yes yes I understand and do whatever the heck they feel is right. It's wrong, a visitor fine, but a full time person in this country needs to learn english the language of business.
I have no idea. Although I think that it is everyone's best interest to learn English, I think people should be able to speak whatever language they want when they are out and about.
I don't get bent out of shape, I actually Speak fluent spanish and some french.
But I don't think I should HAVE to speak any other lanugage in America, other than English.
Most countries have an official national language. the U.S. does not, but English is the defacto language. However instead of teaching English to the Hispanic immigrant minority, many Hispanic politicians want to for the English -speaking majority to be forced to learn Spanish, by making Spanish the official language of the U.S.
There is also a tendency for mono-lingual people to assume that someone is speaking a different language as a sort of private "code". The American-Hispanic comedian Paul Rodriguez pointed this out in his routine "You're in America now, so Speak Spanish!"
The main compliant is that many Hispanic illegal immigrants take much from our economy without contributing. For a good examply of this watch the movie "Fast Food Nation"
Its not just in the border areas, first of all. And, I don't get bent out of shape when I hear any language spoken in people's personal conversations. What I do object to is my tax dollars being used to print things in Spanish, and the costs of translators, separate texts, etc. in schools, paying for translators at the polls, the costs of having things like tax forms, road signs, etc. printed in 2 languages. I also don't like the fact that there are stores that I go into that require me to speak Spanish to ask for help - even the cashiers can't speak a lick of English. I don't like being forced to speak Spanish (although I can, and I do). 2 Reasons - first of all, English is the de facto language in the U.S. Secondly, it is discrimination against people who speak languages other than Spanish & English. If things are going to be offered in Spanish, then it also needs to be offered in Mandarin, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Russian, Gaelic, Tagalog, etc. It cannot be conditional - its all or nothing.
Disrespectful. Impolite. The majority that speak Spanish openly are illegal. not all most. The folks up north may speak french which still caps my butt they are the same way.
cuz they probably dont understand spanish. if sumbody doesnt wanna hear me speaking spanish, theyre gonna have to leave the room.
When you don't understand something, you become ignorant... Plain and simple.
I live in Nebraska, and let me tell you how much I hate going to Wal Mart. Why? I live in a country where people speak ENGLISH. Not SPANISH. And all I hear is SPANISH. If you care enough to come here, or run across the border for a better life, you should care enough to learn English. My family moved here LEGALLY from India, and learned English, and ONLY speak English in public. Why? Because they think it's disrespectful not to. (It is!) So all you Hispanics...learn to speak English.I do however think travelers have a get out of jail card free when it comes to speaking their native language.
I live in the English speaking USA , and woud appreciate others who live here to learn English.
The beauty of the US is the freedom to learn a second anguage IF i want to , but last time I checked English is our language.
I would appreciate not being asked to choose 1 for english 2 for spanish.I want someone to get my orders right for once and not argue that I ordered the wrong thing.
If you want to speak any language at home thats fine , just leave it at home.
I can speak broken Spanglish amongst other things out of necessity, things like : Mucho Cerveza, tops my list with the people I am accustomed to dealing with.
Well I speak both english and spanish. Its funny that sometimes ppl will give me "the look" and assume I don't speak english, then I start speaking english and all of the sudden they're nice! lol! I'm teaching my husband spanish, he's American! =D
Because people here hate Hispanics. they do not hate Europeans. I mean i agree that people who live In this country Need to learn the language of it but it doesn't matter if they did they would still be hated.
