If I apply for a green card (permenant residence) replacement, will its issue have a new 10-year expiration?

My wallet got stolen, losing my green card with it. It will expire next year (June 2008), which is beyond the six-month requirement for renewal. I'm not sure if I should apply for a replacement now, or wait until next year and apply for renewal, and go without it for the time being.

Answer:
i would apply for a replacement right now. mainly for one reason, you could have your identity stolen from you. alot could happen between now and next year, what if some one sold your green card in the black market? and what if the person who bought the green card committed a crime or misused the card? it still has your name on it and that would be a real mess to try to untangle if they come looking for you. so report it stolen, get a replacement then next year get your renewal. it is better than a total headache if the worst case happened.
My understanding of the expiration date is that it doesn't affect your status. In other words if it expires you're still a permanent resident. For that reason they issue a replacement with a new expiration date 10 years out.
You should request a replacement now. You don't want to be caught without one and it will take a while to get it.
