What is the defeniton of immigration in the United States?

Answer:
In the US, Immigration is the legal entering of the country (applying for permission to enter and work, being screened for disease and submitting to a criminal background check, to name some of the requirements).

Illegal Aliens are those that either sneak in under cover of darkness (to turn a phrase), or overstay their visa.
any foriegner, who is not legally of US descent
American Heritage Dictionary

im·mi·grate

To enter and settle in a country or region to which one is not native.

I think this is the meaning everywhere...not just the US.

Immigration is the process of people moving from their home country to the US in order to live. They can be legal or illegal. Either way they are, by definition, immigrants.
speak Spanish, don't pay taxes, get all government services for free. Complain we don't get enough.
Someone that legally comes here and works to become a citizen.

That totally eliminates all the ILLEGAL aliens, where ever they come from. These people, whether they are from England, Ireland, Mexico or Peru, are squatters that are hoping for amnesty.
Well, for true american taxpayers, when we say immigration, we mean those who come here in massive groups each year, who come and try to open businesses in differen't languages, have kids here (that don't respect our country), and that usually get handouts from the government.
You received the dictionary definition of Immigration. But in the US the definition of immigration is the process of legally acquiring permission to enter the country for work or the potential to become a citizen.
Since your question clearly asks "IN THE U.S." and not "BY THE U.S.", I can only assume that the definition can be a popular one...I think it could well be.."IMMIGRATING>ENTERING ILLEGALLY".. Am sure other answers will provide legal and dictionary type definitions., which may well be the answer you are looking for..thought I would provide an option..
