Paperwork is done, visa stamped, I am waiting for my green card in the mail, how long does it usually take?
Answer:
It takes different amounts of time to get your green card in the mail depending on the office it was sent to. You can track your application on the USICS website if you set up an account with them.

You need to apply for your SSN separately from your green card. If you have EAD then you can go to your local SS office and apply for a SSN.
Good Luck!
Can't tell you that...but welcome to America :)
But, since it is government...probably MONTHS!!
If you have a valid visa which allows you to work in the US, then you can get an SSN right now. Just walk into the local Social Security office with the appropriate documentation and you'll get one.
Even if you go down to the ss office the willstill send it to in the mail and it should take 4-6 weeks. The reason for that, i believe, is because the need verify all your information with immigration. You are almost there, just be patient. Good Luck.
It takes about 2 months to get your green card, but in the mean time your passport is just as valid, you can use that to get a social security number and any other ID's needed.
